Eleven

Fil met Fynn at the coffee pot. She’d been awake all night, thinking through the developments, unsure what to do next. Jessa had declined to stay, which was probably for the best, though it hadn’t eased Fil’s inner tension in the slightest. “Morning sunshine.” Fil chirped over her mug as she scooted over to let Fynn reach the cupboard.

“When did you get here?” Fynn asked, yawning half way through.

Fil shrugged. “An hour ago. Addian and Omen were headed out, I snuck in through the garage as they passed. I didn’t want to wake you.”

“Is that coffee?” a soft voice called from the doorway.

“Dark, sweet nectar of the Gods? Yes ma’am.” Fil smiled. “I’m Filomena.”

“Nera.”

“Ahhhh. I wondered when I’d get to meet you. Welcome to the funny-farm.”

“Too early.” Fynn scolded. “Nera hasn’t figured out yet that we’re all crazy.” She smiled.

Nera spluttered over her coffee cup. “Too late for that I’m afraid.” She giggled. “I knew you all were bonkers long ago. Made it easier to deny a return trip to claim Turg.”

Fynn settled into a chair with her cup, rubbing her eyes. “Can’t blame you for that. I’d have beaten a path to anywhere but here if I were his destined mate.”

Nera grinned mischievously. “Don’t worry over it. I’ll have him whipped into shape soon enough.” She winked.

Fil’s eyes flew wide. “Ohhhh, I like her. I like her a lot.” She commented to Fynn.

“Yes. I suppose you would.” Fynn snickered, picking up her mug to blow across it.

“Where is everyone?” Nera questioned.

“Fil here says Addian and Omen went out. I don’t know about anyone else. Turg isn’t with you?” Fynn queried between sips.

“Did I hear my name?” Sturgeon called from the doorway. “Good morning ladies…and, Fil.” He amended as he dropped the towel from his head to around his shoulders.

“Sturgeon.” Fil countered.

“Had a lovely swim, thanks for asking.” He continued as though Fil hadn’t spoken, leaning down to peck Nera at the temple. “Also, I drained the pool. Too many swimmers, it needed fresh water.” He added to Fynn as he moved toward the counter.

Fil groaned. “No, it didn’t. But, thanks.”

“So, cats away? Did I hear that right?” Turg questioned.

“No. The only cat you need to worry over is right here.” Nera countered decisively.

“Yes, dear.” Turg replied.

Fil’s eyes were wide as she looked from the couple to Fynn. “Me-ow.”

“Don’t start.” Fynn mouthed. “Why are you here anyway?”

“I’ll tell you later. What’s the plan for today?”

Pounding on the back door drew everyone’s attention quick. Sturgeon pulled it open when he saw Rox’s face through the glass. “You could have just come in.”

“Not my house, and I wasn’t thinking about that. Where’s Addian & Omen?” Rox demanded, not stopping to take a breath.

“What’s wrong?” Fynn asked, drawing him into the room.

“One of the water world clubs was hit early this morning. I need to go check it out. I’d like backup.”

“Which world?” Fil asked, somehow certain she already knew by Rox’s demeanor.

“Timus’ place.” Rox countered, nearly breathless. “There are several unaccounted for.”

Fil’s skin twitched.
