Chapter Twenty

Paul

As soon as I got home, I went out to the balcony to report. I fully expected Z to be pissy, but they seemed almost pleased when they manifested.

That couldn’t be good.

“I’m, uh, not sure, but I think Melinda has told Emmy what she is.” I sat as still as I could, even though I was sure Z would call me out on not being sure. I was supposed to be keeping a close watch on her. I should know.

But they just laughed, a low, guttural sound that felt the way nails on a chalkboard sounded. “Indeed.”

“What?” Showing confusion or weakness to them was a terrible idea, but Z’s near-giddiness—for The Powers—was throwing me off.

“We have been informed that Emmy now knows her heritage and her duty. She is being taken out tonight for feeding lessons.”

“Oh.” I wondered who reported. Did they have another Watcher I didn’t know about? That could be really, really bad, given my behavior earlier today. “That’s…good.”

“You will follow Lily and Emmy to make sure Emmy learns to feed without revealing herself.”

Crap. “If Lily is going with her, I’m sure she will be fine.” Probably more than fine. Lily had some of the best pheromone control I’d ever seen. She could direct her pheromones so precisely that I’d seen her call the attention of one particular guy with only a little extra attention from other nearby males. Of course, she’d done it right in front of the guy’s girlfriend. Lily was the poster girl for embracing her nature.

Which meant she was a great choice to teach Emmy, except that the idea of Emmy turning into a mini-Lily made me want to punch things. I remembered how straightforward Emmy had been at the library. Maybe she could handle herself, though.

Regardless, the last thing I wanted to do was follow the two of them through a nightclub and watch Emmy make out with other guys.

I reminded myself that I not only had no business being jealous of Emmy with other guys, but that she had to feed in order to survive, but it didn’t help much.

“I know she will be fine. Because you will make sure she is fine.” Z still had that almost happy tone to their voice, but there was steel behind it. No arguing. Got it.

I held back a sigh. “If you insist.”

“I do. Lily is a good servant, but she is impulsive. You may be needed to assist with cover if Emmy loses control.” I could almost hear their claws rubbing together with glee. “Given her naïveté and inexperience, we have high hopes she will learn not just to feed, but to deposit her first soul tonight.”

Oh shit. Emmy would never recover from that.

The implications of her sweet nature, obsession with romance novels, and complete inexperience hit me like bricks to the head. She was even less prepared for this than I had been. Killing—handing a soul over to The Powers—would destroy her.

There was no way I could let that happen.

“I’ll be there.”

Z gave me the details of where Lily and Emmy would be, and then left.
