Chapter Fifteen

Lazarus locked the door and turned to Sasha, who stumbled forward from fatigue into the hotel room. Dawn was starting to light the sky and the soft rays showcased the breathtaking view of the city and the Chicago River.

Sasha remained silent, touring the room as Lazarus dropped the overnight bags they’d gathered in a rush on their way here.

“Wow! I thought when you said we were going to a safe house that it would be in a shady area without windows and concrete walls, not The Langham. Luxury wasn’t what I expected.”

“I’ve stayed here on a mission previously. This place is used by operatives in the area, and as I still have connections back home it was easy to secure a room under another name, just in case.”

Sasha gave him an adorable wink. “And here I thought you were trying to impress me with your money.”

The teasing was new coming from her, and Lazarus couldn’t help but do the same. “If that’s the case, you have the wrong brother. Archer is the one who can shower you with money.”

Sasha sat on the immense white bed as if considering his statement. “I don’t think I’ve chosen the wrong brother. But maybe that’s my exhaustion talking.”

A second wink pulled at him, and he went to sit on the bed. “How about you go have a shower and slide into bed? You deserve some rest.”

It was clear the doctor was tempted as her hand petted the soft bed cover, but she resisted. “I’d rather check your back. It’s been bugging me since you removed your vest.”

In reaction, Lazarus rolled his shoulders. There was a definite strain, but nothing that time and a hot shower wouldn’t cure. “I don’t need tending. You’ve been through a lot tonight, and you need to rest, Sasha.”

It was clear that she’d fight him, but Lazarus was ready for negotiation. “Listen, how about you take a shower or even a bath if you want, I’ll order some food, and then you can check my back?”

With a frown, Sasha looked like she was ready to argue, but the temptation of having a shower and a warm meal seemed to sway her decision. “You’re not off the hook, King. I’ll probably feel more awake after a quick shower anyway.”

Lazarus went to get her bag, and she disappeared into the bathroom. He waited until he heard the water running before he pulled out his phone. The first call was to order food. The second one was to Kai.

“Brother, just tell me you and Sasha are safe.”

The worry in his brother’s voice was undeniable. “Yes, we’re safe at The Langham for now.”

“Damn, man. I think Sasha shaved ten years off my life last night. Isabel doesn’t agree, but I think I’m going gray now from pure fear.”

Lazarus knew the feeling too well where Sasha was concerned. “I wanted your version of what happened when Sasha disappeared.”

Kai explained how the doctor had gone to recheck on Amos, to the moment she dashed out of sight.
