SIXTEEN

Both men were silent as the smooth sound of Ben’s truck moved away. Kenny turned toward his cousin with a half grin and said,

“What, are you going to tell me that you had to send her away or do you really want ice cream so bad?”

“I wouldn’t mind a bowl of ice cream,” Ben said, choosing his words with care. “But I need to talk to you about something. Go dip the ice cream and I’ll start.”

“Must be serious.” Kenny dug in the drawer for a scoop.

“It is. Katy is in big trouble. Her life may be in danger.”

“What the hell?”

Ben shared her story, detail by detail and by the time he finished, he was scraping his spoon against an empty bowl.

“Do you really think they’ll come after her here?”

He put bowl and spoon aside with enough force that the spoon clinked. “Yeah, I do. $300,000 is a lot of money and this Hu Sing is a wicked guy.”

“So what do you want me to do?”

“Keep an eye out for anything strange, anyone who doesn’t seem to belong here. I figure he’ll send an advance man to scout her out if he learns she could be in this area.”

Kenny picked up both bowls and took them to the sink.

“That’s it?”

Ben grinned. “It is for now. I have an idea or two but I can’t do much right now. Hey, can you find an old truck like mine that doesn’t run or I can buy cheap?”

“Why?”

He raised his voice in falsetto, like the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz, “All in good time, my pretty, all in good time.”

The box of tissues flew toward him and he deflected it with one arm.

“Fuck you, Ben,” Kenny said, cackling with laughter. “You know how bad that scared me as a kid. If I could get one of those flying monkeys, I’d send it over here.”

Laughing until he was breathless felt amazingly good; it had been years since he cut up like this with anyone. He felt the bitterness of the lonely years draining away like receding floodwaters. The Wizard of Oz had been one of their favorite shows up to the age of ten or eleven; they had acted out scenes for weeks after the annual showing each spring.

“I can’t attend you here and now as I might like,” Ben wheezed, paraphrasing the lines of the Wicked Witch of the West. “But I’ll get you, my pretty, you and the little dog, too.”

Kenny whooped with laughter and collapsed to the floor, his feet kicking in helpless mirth. His ridiculous pose made Ben laugh even more and he slid from the chair onto the carpet.

Bright sunlight hit him full in the face when Katherine walked in with a suitcase in one hand. She halted at the site of them rolling on the floor, put down the bag, and placed her hands on her hips.

“What in the world are you doing?”

“We’re having fun,” Ben said, his laughter changing into a cough. He wheezed and had trouble catching his breath.
