CHAPTER 10

Al was out of money and hungry. He hadn’t slept in a bed for over a week and was getting desperate when he walked into the store. It was a little mom and pop store on the corner of a rundown residential section in an old part of town. He didn’t think there would be much money, but he needed whatever he could get.

He browsed around the shelves until the last customer left. As he approached the counter, he pulled his cap down and his t-shirt over the bottom of his face. He drew the cop’s gun and pointed it at the old Korean woman behind the cash register. “Money, now!” he growled.

The woman froze. “I no speak English,” she blurted.

He didn’t believe her. He struck her across the cheek with the barrel of the gun. Blood spurted from the gash. He bellowed, “Money, now!”

She cried out in pain at the gash opened on her cheek. With one hand trying to stem the flow of blood, she opened the cash register with the other. She pulled out ones, fives and tens and handed them to him. He looked down and saw there was only about fifty dollars there.

He looked up at her and said, “The twenties, underneath the tray. Now!”

“Me, no speak English,” she cried again.

He pointed the gun over her shoulder and pulled the trigger. The roar beside her ear was deafening. “The twenties or the next one will be in your head!” he roared. “Now!”

She lifted the tray out and pulled out all the twenties, even a couple of fifties and handed them to him. “That’s better, now in the back, move!”

Ten minutes later, the old woman was tied up and gagged in the back of the store. Al was walking down the street as if nothing had happened. Twenty minutes after that, a customer found the old woman and called the police.

Al was long gone.

Detective Cooper was at his desk when the call came in. One of the other detectives recognized St. James on the surveillance video and called him. Now, he was in the back of the store reviewing the video with the other detective. “Is that him?” the man asked.

Cooper watched as the image on the screen struck the old woman in the face with the gun. “Yeah, that’s him, and that looks like the officer’s gun he stole when he shot her.”

Mike was cleaning up the kitchen when the phone rang. “I’ll get it,” said Mikey. “Hello? Just a minute.”

He looked at Kitty, “It’s for you.”

Kitty took the phone, “Hello?”

“Kitty?” a woman’s voice asked. “This is Sandy Boyd, remember me?”

“Oh yes, Dr. Boyd’s wife, from the ICU at City General, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” she replied. “Listen, Ronnie asked me to call you and tell you that your surgery is set for Sunday morning at 6 AM at Mercy. Is that okay?”

Kitty was stunned. “So soon! Hold on, let me check,” she said. She covered the phone and told Mike. “The surgery is scheduled for Sunday morning, can you take me?”

“Of course,” he said.
