"Her recent browsing history includes pages and pages of suspected missing treasure hoards in Arizona." Daniel was listening as I told him what I'd found. We sat at the kitchen table over Chinese take out. In fact, I'd found lists of unrecovered gold coins, dust and ingots, train and bank robberies, Arizona caves and canyons with vague locations of stolen early Mexican, Spanish and Native American silver, turquoise, and gold jewelry, and religious artifacts. Most of the stories dated to the 1800s, with one exception. I'd found the same website on my own laptop and read the description out loud.
"Montezuma's silver hoard is rumored to have been stolen from Mexico in the 1500s during the conquest of Cortez. Several locations have been suggested as the hidden resting place for a collection of silver jewelry, embellished with turquoise and other semiprecious gems, along with gold utensils, bracelets, rings and other items."
"That's so long ago, Cali. If it hasn't been recovered, maybe it's just a legend, a myth."
"That's just it, the article says a portion of it was found." I continued to read.
"Three locations have fascinated treasure hunters over the centuries since: 1. Montezuma's Well, a sinkhole located near Montezuma's Castle cliff dwellings, near Casa Verde, 2. Somewhere near Tucson, where a small Spanish silver hoard was discovered, and 3. An undisclosed location between the first two locations where it is theorized the robbers buried a part of their loot when threatened by an imminent attack by rivals." Taking a deep breath, I continued, my voice vibrating with excitement.
"Do you think that unknown location is anywhere near the pecan farms? Maybe that's where Josh took Sophie. What do you think?"
Daniel looked thoughtful as he reached for the last egg roll.
"Cali, you know there's a reason all those missing hoards have never been found. I doubt Josh, of all people, took the time necessary to look for anything as well hidden as most of it seems to be. Unless he found it by accident."
"Well, he might have." I was reluctant to give up my theory and started clearing the table. "Let's see if we can connect Josh and the treasure with the disappearances of Kate and Rose, or Dolly's murder."
None of our theories seemed to fit, and we finally called it a day. As Daniel gave me a soft kiss on the cheek and walked out the front door, my cell phone rang.
