Lucy could see the morning’s outing had taken more out of Bryce than he wanted to admit, so once they returned to his house, she enlisted Meghan’s help to convince him to take another pain pill and rest. At his daughter’s insistence, he reluctantly complied.

Once he was asleep, Lucy messaged Detective Ross to update him on the interviews she’d conducted this morning with Amanda Lake’s acquaintances. When he responded he was about to view security footage from her attack at the hotel, she charged Meghan with looking out for her father, then borrowed Bryce’s truck and drove to town. She wanted to be there when Ross examined that footage and hopefully discover who was targeting her.

She met him at the precinct, and he keyed up the video surveillance tape he’d gotten from the hotel.

“The hotel staff was able to identify everyone coming and going in the footage except for one person. This guy.” He stopped the tape at an image of someone leaving the hotel through the back door. The suspect was dressed in black and wearing a baseball cap to hide his face. He was tall but slender, and something about the image didn’t sit right with Lucy.

“Do you recognize him?”

“No. How could I? You can’t even see his face. But go back several seconds. Our guy passed by another man in the hallway.” Ross keyed that image back up, and Lucy knew she was right. “Look how much larger the other man is compared to our guy. And look at the way he walks. I’m not sure that’s a man at all, Detective Ross. I think we’re looking for a woman.”

He stared at the image, then leaned back in his chair and heaved a sigh. “I think you might be right.”

“A woman could have set up that trap as easily as a man. Plus it might explain why someone is after me when I haven’t done anything to anyone.”

“Do you think she’s working with the Back Roads Killer?”

“Nothing in his profile suggests he would have a partner. The type of violence he perpetrates screams a hatred for women. But it is possible there’s someone in his life who is submissive to him, and he’s forcing her to do his bidding. It would have to be someone very close to him, a wife or significant other, or a close family member—someone trapped in the relationship with this killer. Most people who discovered their family member or friend was a killer would be too horrified to participate in any wrongdoings, so this would have be someone he has control over or who has something to lose if his deeds are uncovered.”

“Okay, so we go back to the realization that if she kills an FBI agent, the town will be swarming with federal agents determined to hunt down the killer.”

“What if she’s not trying to cover his tracks? What if she’s trying to get him captured?”

“An anonymous tip would be the easiest way to accomplish that, not murder,” Ross stated.

“This woman, if it is a woman, would be so beaten down by this secret looming over her life.
