DANNY

Leon’s hallucination had me all kinds of rattled, and I couldn’t stop checking on him as we drove out of Erie. He hadn’t said much, but he had staggered out into the middle of the street like he was looking at something distressing. Then he’d screamed in horror and just collapsed to the ground like he’d been shot.

The scariest part of it all was the way he hugged Kai. Did he just hallucinate us all dying?

His freak-out was making me freak out, and eventually, I just climbed into the back and curled up in bed with him. He was half asleep and feverish but held onto me tightly.

Kai made no comment, just drove in silence while Leon held me like his favorite teddy bear and mumbled things in his sleep about broken necks, shootings, and meteors. And ginger cats. More than once, I caught him muttering about an evil ginger cat.

It took more than an hour before he relaxed enough to sleep properly, and I very carefully peeled myself out of his sweaty embrace.

“How is he?” Kai asked as I clambered back into the passenger seat beside him.

I gave a shrug, because I didn’t want to say the answer out loud. But he certainly wasn’t getting better.

Kai didn’t bother with empty platitudes, instead just reaching out and lacing our fingers together as he drove. I held onto his hand like a lifeline, even as I shifted my gaze out the window and went to the happy place in my mind. The place where I played out in vivid detail all the ways I would make Blanchet pay for hurting my bunny. Every cut, every hit, it was all so easy to imagine.

The only frustrating thing about it was that Blanchet was still faceless, and not because I’d messed it up so bad. Because he was still just a name and not a face to us. So far.

Sometime later, Kai pulled into a gas station at my request so I could pee and get snacks. I always found huge Fritos on a drive so much more enjoyable, and I was so restless and anxious that I needed the distraction of doing something. Even if it was just eating corn chips.

Kai was on the phone, standing outside the truck when I got back from paying, and I offered him a corn chip. He smiled but shook his head.

“Thank you, Eli,” he said, deliberately letting me know who he was speaking to. “That’s very helpful. Tell him to call me as soon as he gets the location.” He ended the call, then clasped a hand on my waist, pulling me close.

Rising up on my toes, I pressed my lips to his for a kiss. “You look pleased,” I murmured.

He licked his lips and hummed. “Spicy. And I am pleased. My team is making progress. Cyryl is currently interrogating someone—a Guild merc—who supposedly worked on this project several years ago. I would assume while Zhou was funding it. But she surely will know the names of whoever is still developing it.
