Grant called Control on the move, sticking to the quieter streets heâd taken with Lagrange the night before.
âLagrange and Haslitt are dead,â he said.
Winston paused a moment. âWhat happened?â
âShe was already dead when I got there. Haslitt cut her throat.â Grant waited until heâd passed a group of men drinking coffee outside a café terrace. âI killed Haslitt. There wasnât any other way. There was a woman on the stairs. She heard noise in Lagrangeâs flat. I told her I was helping her move. But we should get a clean-up team in there ASAP. Removal men might be a good cover for them.â
It impressed Winston that Grant was thinking about such things. âWhere are you now?â he asked.
âA few minutes from Interpol.â
âInterpol? Grant, get back to the meeting point. Our guys are still there.â
âI canât,â said Grant, picking up speed from a jog to a run. âInterpolâs the one place that might still have the answers we need. Iâll call you when itâs done.â
There wasnât time for Grant to explain everything he had done the previous night, when his suspicions about Lagrange were snowballing.
He had asked GCHQ to send her the email containing a malware program. Once installed, it recorded every keystroke on her keyboard. With Grant having created the false premise for her to enter her password that morning, GCHQ had been able to log Lagrangeâs keystrokes. Grant had already called GCHQ, and memorised what could prove to be a vital password. One that he was certain would give him access to the files that Lagrange wanted so desperately to protect. Haslitt might have destroyed the backups, but there was a chance that the originals were still on Lagrangeâs Interpol computer.
Interpol might have looked impressive â the concrete anti-ramming barriers, the checkpoints manned by armed guards in their little huts, the cameras â but those were just window-dressing. Beyond the façade, at its core, it was not much more than a moderately well-protected office block.
Grantâs plan to get inside was simple, but it wasnât easy. It would all rely on one vital piece of the puzzle. The only thing working in his favour: no one at Interpol knew yet that Ãdith Lagrange was dead.
