Chapter 6

Jane

“You seem...antsy.”

Greyson sits on the couch next to me, arm slung behind me to rest along the upholstered back. We’ve been—well, hanging out, I guess, as unlikely as that sounds between a contract killer and the child of a political family. Talking and joking like friends, although I’m not sure that’s the word I would use for this thick tension that bubbles between us.

Friends don’t pin each other to the counter for...well, what we did earlier, for openers.

“Can’t help it,” I say. I’m well-rested, belly full of Denise’s—surprisingly good—tuna noodle casserole and pleasantly warm after two glasses of white wine that Greyson produced from somewhere in this ridiculous cabin. But I’ve been in this cabin for almost twenty-four hours and I’m antsy to go outside, to move, to stare at something other than the smooth, blank white walls.

I spring to my feet, away from Greyson’s tantalizing warmth and thick tattooed arm, and idly wander around the great room. There are no knickknacks here, no dust or little personal touches. It’s comfortable, but impersonal. A little cold, like I assumed Greyson to be last night.

I was wrong about him, though. So wrong.

“What about you? Aren’t you a little bored cooped up in here?” I spin around to face him, but his whole body is infuriatingly still.

“I’m—” he pauses, considering. “A little itchy, yeah. I’m used to a certain routine, and staying inside all day isn’t my usual thing.” He rises to his feet, muscles bunching and flexing with the slow and easy movement, and heads for the window.

“What?” I move closer, peering over his shoulder. “Is there someone out there?”

He glances back at me and smiles. “No. Nobody for miles. Do you...do you want to go sit outside with me? Look at the stars? You won’t see them like this down in L.A., I promise.”

I smile back at him. “You’ve been pretty good about keeping your promises so far.”

“Princess,” he says, turning from the window to step toward me, “I always do.”

It’s cool out here atop this lonely mountain, and a cool breeze whips through the scrubby trees and cools my heated cheeks as I follow Greyson out onto the wide wooden porch. The only sounds I hear are the wind, the thump of Greyson’s worn boots against the wood planks of the porch and the gentle chirps and calls of nocturnal creatures.

There’s a blanket slung over Greyson’s shoulder, and while I pause at the top of the porch stairs and look out into the velvet darkness, he tugs it free and spreads it out on the ground, meticulously smoothing the wrinkles and folds out before he turns and beckons for me to join him.

“You really can’t see the cities at all from here,” I say as I lay back on the old blanket and fold my arms behind my head. “I almost never see stars this clearly.”

“Me either,” he admits as he flops down next to me. “I don’t get out of L.A. as often as I’d like, and when I do manage to leave, there’s not a lot of leisure time built in.
