Chapter 13

ADDISON GANG CAPTURED: SHERIFF J.G. KERRIGAN A HERO

The newspaper was in the hands of every citizen of Burr on Sunday morning, a special edition Sarah Donovan had spent the night printing.

Kerrigan walked into the hotel restaurant to greetings and slaps on the back. With the jail shot up and the prisoners in a temporary prison in the livery, he didn’t really have time for breakfast meetings with local politicians, but he knew it was a necessary evil in order to move things along. The marshals were set to arrive tomorrow. Then he could turn over the Addisons to the authorities and direct his attention to rebuilding what had been destroyed, to get the town back to normal.

The determination burned in his gut. He had taken the Addisons’ assault on Burr personally, as if it were his own home they had damaged. And for the first time, he wasn’t thinking about a bounty or how soon he could leave town. In fact, the thought of leaving at all left an empty ache inside.

And what the hell did that mean?

Across the room, Mayor Castor stood and signaled him over to a table crowded with the town council: the mayor and his wife; Mortimer Tremont; Doc Mercer; and Reverend Westerly. Mrs. Mercer and Mrs. Westerly had joined the group, more for social reasons than town business, he figured. Shoving aside his confusing emotions, he headed over.

“Heck of a job, Sheriff!” hollered one of the cattlemen in the dining room. He held up the newspaper as Kerrigan wound his way toward the mayor. Other citizens called out greetings and accolades along the way. Kerrigan gave a wave to the crowd and sat down in the empty chair at the table next to Doc Mercer.

“Morning, Doc,” Kerrigan said, removing his hat. “How’s Evers this morning?”

“Lost a lot of blood, but he’ll live.” Doc looked at the mayor. “In fact, I’d like to get this meeting over with as soon as possible, Arnold, so I can get back to my patient.”

Mayor Castor nodded. “Of course, of course.”

“I’ll come by and see him later today,” Kerrigan said just as Blanca Gonzalez appeared at his elbow.

“What can I get you, Sheriff?”

“Just coffee right now. Black.”

The girl nodded and darted away.

“Just coffee, Sheriff? Oh, you must have something else,” Mrs. Castor insisted. “The town council is paying for breakfast this morning, and it’s the least we could do after yesterday’s events.”

“Coffee will do for now,” Kerrigan said. “I can’t stay long.”

“Of course, your prisoners.” Reverend Westerly gave a somber nod.

“That’s right,” Kerrigan said. “I don’t trust the Addisons, even if they are hogtied in the livery. I just won’t rest easy until I turn them over to the marshals tomorrow.”

“So dedicated,” Mrs. Castor gushed. “I knew from the moment I met you that you were the right man for the job.”

“Well, we won’t keep you long, Sheriff,” Mr. Castor said, “but there are some decisions we need to make.”

“Like the jailhouse,” Mortimer Tremont said. “It’s going to cost a pretty penny to repair that, what with the damage from the dynamite.
