I felt the tension at the table immediately when I returned from my presenter duties. The girl brought me back, though I could have easily found it on my own. I think she did it so she could look at Jameson some more, but he didnât seem to be in the mood.
When I sat down, he put his arm along the back of my chair like he had earlier, but this time it felt different. Proprietary. I saw Chipâs gaze darken as he noticed. His eyes shifted up from Jamesonâs hand to my face. I tried to look away before our gazes caught, but I wasnât fast enough. We stared at each other. I sensed that if I could see myself, my face would be a mixture of trepidation and defiance. Jameson was making clear what Iâd been hinting at.
Chip would never have me.
I was both grateful and irritated that Jameson had forced this clarity. Chip had hardly been pleasant before, but I had a feeling he could get worse. And I was still at his directorial mercy for the next month.
For the rest of the show, I sat stiffly in my chair. I was unwilling to lean into Jameson or relax back into his arm, but I was equally unwilling to shift away from the comfort of his nearness. He seemed amused by my indecision. Every so often, heâd lean in and whisper, âAre you comfortable?â And when I nodded, heâd press, âBecause you donât look comfortable.â
I wasnât comfortable, and his breath on my ear only exacerbated the situation. Knowing how good it would feel if I gave up on keeping Jameson at bay was almost torturous.
When the show finally ended and the lights came up, I could sense Jameson watching me. Waiting to see if we were finally going to acknowledge to each other what was happening between us, or whether we were going to keep pretending it was just an act. A scene we were playing out for other people.
I didnât look back at me, because I didnât know yet. My body wanted to take him back to my bungalow in the hills, light a fire, and leave the balcony doors open while we kept each other warm in my king-sized bed. But every time I reached the tipping point, my mind put in its two cents.
Kat. Harris.
And I froze up again.
I was grateful when Mackenzie and her mother came over to our table.
âYou should have won for best actress,â Mackenzieâs mom told me kindly.
âI wasnât nominated,â I said, though the compliment warmed me. It was such a mom thing to say. Something mine never would have.
âBut you should have been nominated,â Mackenzieâs mom said. âAnd you should have won.â
âRomantic comedies never win, Ma,â Mackenzie said, rolling her eyes affectionately.
âReese won for a romantic comedy,â Mackenzieâs mom said, undeterred.
Mackenzie and I frowned at each other. âIs Walk the Line a romantic comedy?â
âAside from the fact they were drug addled adulterers, I think so,â Jameson said.
âYou would,â I said.
