TWENTY-NINE
Inez had just sat down on the sofa in the sitting room of her apartment. She never tired of the roomâwhite leather sofas and chairs with stark white wood furniture created a startling contrast with the carmine walls shining a deeper red under dim ceiling lighting. She was tired after a day catching up on her work at the travel agency. She called it a travel agency but, apart from wealthy tourists who actually wanted to travel, it was cover for her real income earnerâan escort agency.
Sheâd been born to a Portuguese family descended from the early settlers. But her father didnât have the business sense of his forebears and committed suicide when his trading firm went bust. Her mother followed him shortly after, leaving Inez to fend for herself. She quickly found that her looks earned her good money from her fatherâs business acquaintances. Word spread and the islandâs night life became her source of clientele. It wasnât long before she found other attractive girls and women in the same predicament and, for a fee, she set them up with men willing to pay top dollar. The money was rolling in but she wanted more and began scouting Dao airport for lone, defenceless young women or girls who arrived alone and had a certain lost look on their faces. She had tried to define it but it was elusiveâsometimes evasive, other times needy. Whatever the look was it invariably led her to a woman escaping drudgery at home or a girl needing a roof having left home and was now penniless. Some gentle persuasion soon found them joining the Inez Cruzâs âtravel agencyâ.
She was particularly pleased to have picked up this Katya woman. Sheâd been convinced Katya hadnât been on the plane sheâd travelled inâsheâd have noticed the long stunning auburn hair and that expensive red silk top, for sure. Then the surreptitious way sheâd inserted herself into the queue departing the aircraft was suspicious. And, later, the woman had tried to cover that red top with the linen jacket and had hidden her hair under the white hat. It was almost laughable. Who was she trying to kid? Inez knew it would be easy to pick her up and put her straight on the game. She was just the sort to sell herself for easy money. It was lucky a regular had been looking for someone just then, but she wondered if sheâd charged enough. Sheâd have to pay $200 of the $700 to Katya. But then this was a try-out. Sheâd get a thousand dollars for her, next timeâshe was a stunning girl with her tall, slim figure, her beautiful face with those fine, unusually large violet-blue eyes and that long glossy auburn hair.
