CHAPTER SEVEN

IT WAS her wedding day.

As Abbie stood in her bedroom and surveyed her reflection in the cheval mirror, she still couldn’t quite believe that it was happening—that she was going to marry Damon Cyrenci.

As a little girl she had always maintained quite staunchly that when she grew up she would never get married. She supposed her parents’ marriage had put her off; John and Elizabeth Newland had certainly not been a glowing advertisement for the institution.

She remembered telling her mother once when she’d been about ten that she didn’t even want a boyfriend let alone a husband. Her mother had laughed. ‘Abbie, when you grow up and find someone you truly love then you will change your mind. And I hope when you do that you find the kind of man who is protective and tender and strong—someone who lets you find your wings and soar. With that kind of love, you can conquer the world.’

Why was she thinking about that now? Abbie blinked back the tears. She couldn’t think about her mother today—this was already hard enough.

Her eyes drifted down over her suit. She was wearing an ivory silk pencil-skirt that finished just under the knee, teamed with a matching nipped-in jacket that showed off her tiny waist and the swell of her breast.

On Damon’s insistence she had allowed his chauffeur to drop her into town yesterday afternoon so that she could buy something to wear.

‘Buy some new lingerie as well,’ Damon had instructed as he’d peeled some notes out of his wallet.

She’d turned away from him before he’d been able to press the money into her hand. ‘I can afford my own dress and underwear, Damon,’ she had told him forcefully.

‘But we both know that what you really want is to spend this…don’t we?’ He’d pulled her back and tucked the notes down into her bra.

Just thinking about that now made her upset and furious all over again.

He really thought that she was just interested in money. She bit down on her lip. She understood why he thought that. From his point of view she had lived off her father’s ill-gotten profits without shame or remorse. She was calculating and mercenary. There was nothing she could say that would change the past. She had done what she had done and Damon’s father had died a broken man. She could only hope that once they were married he would get to know the real her, would realise she had never meant to hurt him, and that deep down she wasn’t a bad person.

Damon hadn’t been there when she’d returned from her shopping trip. He’d spent the night at his apartment in town. Elise had told her that he would meet her today at the town hall, where they would be married.

She wondered how he had spent his last night as a bachelor, and how he was feeling this morning. What was he thinking? Had he spent the night with another woman?

That thought brought a punch with it that really hurt.
