THIRTY-SIX

QuickMart was on Travis Street, one block up from the three-hundred stretch of Main. The place smelled of bleach, its floors just mopped.

“Careful where you step” — Ray Whittlen nodded to Vince —

“it’s slippery.”

Vince watched his feet as he walked toward the counter. The Whittlens closed up at five thirty — a little early for a convenience-sized grocery store. But they had kids at home, and Mary had to prepare dinner and oversee homework. Theirs were busy lives.

Vince had the note, bagged for protection. Mary hovered behind the counter, watching with rounded eyes. She was a short and soft-spoken woman with a polite, almost formal way of speaking. Vince guessed she’d never had the slightest tie to crime in her life, much less a heinous murder, and the mere thought left her trembling. Ray, a foot taller than Mary, loomed beside her, hands on his hips, large mouth pursed with indignation at the idea that the killer might have set foot in his store.

“We’ll do whatever we can to help,” he’d declared in his parking lot the minute Vince climbed from the patrol car. “You just tell us what you need.”

When they’d stepped inside the store, Ray had locked the door behind them and turned his red-lettered sign over to “Closed.”
