Noor said to the pitiful man, “Give me your phone.”

Bahram collapsed after his confession. He was scarcely able to breathe. Maybe the thought of extracting his cell with broken fingers was confusing. He grunted and indicated his pants pocket.

Frank reached in, pulled it out, and hit him in the balls.

As she took the phone she said, “I have an idea.” She pulled up his history of calls. “Here’s an entry for Iran,” and she hit it to redial.

“What are you doing?” said Frank. “Wait—”

“Shhh.”

It was 3:30 a.m. in Tehran. Omid was in bed with his wife. The room was dark, and he turned over and groped for the phone on the night table.

“Yes?” Silence. “Hello, Mard?” Silence. “Bahram? Can you hear me? What news?” He was apparently still half asleep.

“We’re coming for you, motherfucker.”

He snapped awake. “You have no idea, whore. I’ll crush you like an ant.”

She clicked off, “That felt good. It says here that his name is Omid. Who’s Omid, Bahram?”

The ugly man groaned and slurred like a drunk. “He works with Mard. When I kill you I have to report to him. I mean, not when I kill you, if I kill you. I mean, I’m not going to kill you.”

“No shit,” said Noor. “Now tell me why they want us dead.”

“Something to do with the man that Mard is protecting. He’s a government killer.”

“What’s his name?” she said.

He took a few moments to respond. His delay seemed more from the pain and disorientation than from reluctance.

“I said, what’s his name?”

“Muhammad. Muhammad.”

Frank said, “Noor, what did Omid say?”

“He’s going to crush us.”
