Falling Water was a restaurant that had a dress code of business formal attire. The five of us, wearing suits, approached the host’s station, with Valentine in the lead and me bringing up the rear behind my uncles and Cisco, who blocked me from view. We’d decided it would be best for Drum not to notice me straightaway.
Drum stood there, dressed in a white tuxedo jacket and black trousers. Neatly styled facial hair covered his cheeks, chin, and upper lip.
“Good evening, Cyril,” Valentine said, giving him a sunny smile.
“Spike!” He frowned at him. “Are you here for dinner? You’ll have to eat in the kitchen. We’re booked solid.”
“We have reservations.” Valentine smirked. “Duchesne, party of five.”
“Duchesne? That’s you?”
“Yep.”
Drum checked the book with the reservations. He made a notation, not looking at all happy.
Valentine leaned back and whispered, “He’s such a stuffed shirt.”
Fortunately, Drum didn’t hear him. He retrieved five leather-bound menus and gave a brisk nod.
“If you’ll—” He began to choke. He’d finally spotted me. “Qu-Quinn?” Since when had he started calling me by my first name?
“Hello, Drum. Or should I call you Cyril?”
His face lit up. “You’re here. You came for me! You’ve got a goatee.” He glanced behind us. A line was starting to form. “I’ll be right with you, sir. If you’ll come this way, gentlemen?”
He led us to a table in a side room and waited for us to seat ourselves before he placed a menu in front of each of us. “Sean will be your waiter.” Drum leaned over, took my napkin, and placed it on my lap. “I have to talk to you,” he whispered. “Give me five minutes to seat this group. Then tell your friends you’re going to the men’s room. I’ll meet you there. I like your goatee.”
“Drum, I have no intention—” I didn’t have the chance to assert I would not meet him; he was gone.
Uncle Tony snapped out his napkin and draped it over his lap. “He seemed pleased to see you.”
I groaned.
“He’s an asshole,” Valentine snarked. “He looks down on the waiters and busboys and thinks this job is beneath him.”
Then why take the job? Drum had studied jurisprudence and was knowledgeable in criminal investigative techniques. If he felt he had to leave the OIG, he could have joined any police force in the country or taken a position with any district attorney.
Meanwhile, Valentine was rattling on. “Out of common courtesy he could have given us one of the reserved tables.”
“Then it’s a good thing you called earlier.” Cisco grinned.
Bryan peered at me over his menu. “Are you going to meet with him?”
“I suppose. But not in the men’s room.”
Drum and our waiter converged on our table at the same time. I bunched up my napkin, rose, and laid it on my seat. “Uncle Tony, would you mind ordering for me?”
“Not at all, Quinton.”
“Aren’t you worried a line is going to form?” I asked Drum as I followed him to the rear of the restaurant.
“No. I had one of the senior waiters take over for me.
