CHAPTER NINE
âGUESS WHAT, GRANDMA?â
Nora stared at her handsome grandson across the dining room table. He was growing up much too fast. It seemed like only yesterday sheâd rocked him to sleep in her arms. But then everything was starting to seem like only yesterday. âIâm terrible at guessing,â she said. âBut whatever it is, Iâd say itâs good.â
âI donât have to change schools. Iâm going to play baseball for Woodstown.â He reared back and raised his arm as if he were about to toss her a ball. âYouâve got to come see me pitch.â
âIâd love to see you pitch.â She was pleased for him. Still, sheâd hoped Madge was ready to move on with her life. Sheâd seemed to be in a holding pattern ever since sheâd lost her husband so many years before. Nora looked at Madge. âYouâre not quitting your classes, are you?â
âNope. Keeping the classes. Giving up sleep.â She leaned over and tousled her sonâs hair. âNo sacrificeâs too great for the future major league pitching ace.â
Nora lifted her eyebrows. âOh?â
âMomâs dropping me off at school before she goes to class in the mornings,â Jake explained. âOn the days I donât have practice or a game, Iâm going to stay with my friend Ben. On the other days, Mom can just pick me up at the baseball diamond.â
Nora tried to imagine her oldest daughter getting up at the crack of dawn to make such a long commute, but the image wouldnât quite jell in her mind. She chided herself for being so negative. It wasnât as if Madge had never carried through on anything. Sheâd stuck with being a mom, and Jake was one terrific teenager.
âThatâs great,â Nora said, determined to stay positive about all of this. School was only for two more months. Madge could do it.
âYeah, Ethan talked to Mom about it and she agreed. And Aunt Alison said that one day sheâd come over and watch me pitch. And if Ethanâs still here, he can come with her. He canât really see me pitch, but he said heâd like to come and hear the sound of my pitches walloping into the catcherâs mitt as I strike the other team out.â
Alison and Ethan. Together. An interesting possibility, though not likely. Alison was having too much fun attracting men like Kevin Bosco. âSo how is your visit to Cooperâs Corner so far, Ethan?â Nora asked. âHave you had a chance to get out and experience the town?â
Ethan wiped his mouth on his napkin before he answered. âMostly Iâve just experienced the Fairchild family. Thatâs been fascinating in itself. But Iâm hoping Alison will show me around a little this weekend.â
âAnother picnic?â Madge asked. âWithout your socks?â
âDefinitely without my socks.â
âIf you stayed out of cold streams, you wouldnât have to worry about your socks,â Alison said, tossing her hair and firing off a very seductive, un-Alisonlike look. Maybe sheâd judged the situation too quickly, Nora decided.
Dale used to call looks like that a come-on. Nora had used them on him all the time, and heâd always succumbed.
