Chapter Ten

At the park where all the college kids hang, Horatio and his friends play basketball. At this park only the best step onto the courts and only the quick lipped, tolerant ones can handle the insults.

“Tommy, I don’t even know why you even stepped your phony tired black ass out on the court let alone try to hold me. I got half our points on just taking you to the hole. You’re embarrassing me because I got to hang out with you.” Horatio says.

“Please, you go around more screens than someone printing tee shirts.” Tommy replies back.

“Screen this like a movie premiere.” Horatio shoots a jumpshot that bricks off the rim into the opponent’s hands. One of the guys pass the ball to Tommy.

“Now lets see who got game and who gets shamed.” Tommy pushes the ball up the court taking it between his legs and keeping Horatio on his heels. “I bet you’re wondering which way I’m going.”

“Shoot the ball fag.” Horatio yells.

“Ho, I’m going to go to my left, which is your right, back you down to the baseline and do a nasty fade away in your face.”

“Yeah right.” Tommy does the move exactly the way he said he would and scores.

“Get that lucky shit out of here.” Simeon says passing the ball to Horatio. Horatio races down the court through everyone for an easy lay-up.

“Damn, Ho, go easy on him. He’s young.” Says Bishop one of the players on the court.

“That nigga need to go get some pussy; then he probably won’t play so tight assed.” Horatio grins.

“Give me the ball.” Tommy yells to a teammate who gives him the ball. One of Tommy’s teammates sets a pick for him. Tommy scores quickly. “In your face.”

“Just play the game.” Bishop says. Horatio passes him the ball but it is immediately stolen. Tommy again gets another easy lay-up.

“That’s the game.” Tommy says.

“Whatever. Y’all was cheating from the start.” Bishop says.

“Y’all should have been playing defense. I can’t do it all by myself.” Horatio says in anger.

“That was your man.” Bishop tells Horatio only aggravating the situation.

“Hey everybody, Horatio is self destructing. That nigga is running low on batteries.” Tommy says getting a laugh from around the court.

“Shut up sucker, it don’t matter cause I’m leaving with a better prize.”

“What? Somebody gonna sit on your face.” Tommy continues.

“You won the game but just wait until you see your girl roll up here.”

“Dang player, what you gonna say about that?” Bishop asks.

“Right, don’t play with me.” Tommy stutters looking directly at the grinning Horatio. Even though Tommy steams like a bull on the inside he plays it off by smiling.

Entering the park gates on the other side is Rhonda, a beautiful, longhaired young lady.

“You talking about Rhonda?” Tommy asks. Simeon looks on.

“Yeah.” Horatio says with a grin.

“Horatio, what you doing?” Simeon asks looking at him strangely.

“Man, she ain’t nothing to me.”

“Ho, that’s my baby Momma, man!”

“You a foul nigga Ho. How you gonna do me and your boy like that.
