That evening at home, I told Felix about the painter’s visit. Felix was the only one I could talk to about things like that. But I couldn’t find the right words to talk about the paintings, and my cheeks were turning red from frustration. So Felix promised to come with me to the library to go through the books of paintings and find something that looked like her work.

The painter spoke, while looking at each one of us.

She looked at each of us, but at some more intensely than others. When my turn came, I must admit, I was hoping for more.

She asked us what kind of job we dreamed of doing.

Dream. That word, next to job, sounds bizarre. Your dream job.

There were only five students who managed to give her an answer. I stayed numb, like most of the class. “Really, you’re sure? You must have a dream. You don’t dare to say it, is that it?”

No, I dare. In fact, I would be delighted to tell you. But I’ve never dreamed of any job. I didn’t even know that you could.

“Another sort of dream, then?”

No, sorry. I turn red. I’m hopeless, sorry. We don’t dream. And I don’t just mean in my family. In this place, too, nobody dreams, I think.

I felt bad.

Scared.

Shamed.

There wasn’t a dream in me.
