Chapter 6

"Okay, we're both settled," Geoff said. "You with your wine and me with my whiskey. So let's get right to it. I know all about the bullshit story of you finding yourself that you fed your family. But you forget, I knew you, Adrian. At least a little bit. And you had a good life in California. You weren't lost, existentially or otherwise."

Adrian laughed. "You haven't changed much, I see."

"Meaning?"

"Your bedside manner, doctor. You're not exactly the understanding type. It's 'cut the crap and tell me what's going on.' I think in a way that makes you a good doctor, really, but it also puts people off. They want some empathy."

"You don't care about that. Why look for a pretense in my character when it's never something you needed."

Adrian smiled. "True enough I guess. I guess leaving was a result of a few things, not just one. And maybe finding myself was part of it. Not spiritually or any of that, but finding my maturity."

Geoff sipped his whiskey and considered Adrian. In spite of the years that had passed and the obvious differences in Adrian, he could still see evidence of that fresh, young, excitable guy he fell in love with. "Tell me."

"Well," Adrian said with a shrug. "There was you."

"Me?" Geoff scoffed. "I didn't have anything to do with you leaving. You dumped me, remember?"

"That wasn't because I didn't care about you, Geoff. It was just...you wanted something I couldn't give you. Not then."

"Monogamy and commitment."

"Yeah. It wasn't what I was expecting. Not out of my life just then."

Geoff smiled wryly. "I know. You wanted to sew your wild oats."

"An old-fashioned way of putting it, but you're not wrong."

"Hey, it's not for everyone. I get that. And there are some people who only want it when they find the right person. I wasn't that magic person to change you, I guess. Whatever. I've moved on from that." Geoff figured if he kept insisting on that verbally and mentally it would be true. He kind of always compared every guy he'd met over the years to the way he felt about Adrian and none of them ever came close. But Adrian and his commitment issues didn't need to know that.

"Well, anyway, I cared a lot about you, Geoff, and breaking things off with you wasn't easy. I wanted you to agree to my terms."

"I'm sure. I wasn't that guy then or now, really. What else?"

"Then there was my family and the gay thing."

Geoff smirked. "The gay thing?"

Adrian gave him an exasperated look. "You know what I mean. I expected, I don't know, more out of them."

"I don't get it. They were hardly the type to throw you out, Adrian. They didn't. As far as I could tell they accepted you and treated you great. We should all have it so easy."

Adrian sighed heavily and took a swallow of his wine. "That is exactly why I don't usually talk about all of this with you, with them, with people that know me.
