Chapter Six

Reece

Cleo and I see each other every day that week. I stop making up excuses to come by the bakery and instead make it a point to show up there just to see her. I don’t need a reason anymore. After seeing the way her ex talked to her, I figure she doesn’t mind someone who appreciates her for the magnificent woman she is. Maybe it isn’t about her being too good for me. Maybe it’s about us being right for each other.

She feeds me during the day—sweet breads and baguettes and donuts and fancy coffees—and then lets me take her out a couple times. First, we go to dinner at some fancy French restaurant whose name I can’t pronounce or remember. Then another night, we go to a movie where we spend the whole time making out like teenagers in the back row. We never take it further than that, though. She always puts a stop to it before it goes too far and never invites me inside. I get the sense that she’s still holding back, trying to give herself permission to let someone else in again. And that’s fine. I’ll give her all the time in the world as long as we get to spend it together.

When the weekend rolls around, I take her to the artisan market where she sells miniature pies and loaves of bread while I act as her stock boy, making sure everything in the booth looks good while she chats up the customers. And there are tons of them. People love her cooking, and they love her. I’m starting to think that I might, too.

On Sunday, the shop serves brunch and then closes early, so we pick that as the day I’ll come by to install the display cases. Somehow, between my wooing Cleo, I’ve found time to create pieces that I’m very proud of and are the perfect combination of vintage, rustic, and functional—the perfect combination of Cleo and me.

I enlist the help of a couple other guys to bring the furniture in. As soon as she sees the shelves, Cleo gasps in shock, covering her mouth with her hands. I know I’ve hit the nail on the head. She strokes the smooth, stained wood. Watching her appreciate my work, it takes every ounce of self-control not to drag her into the kitchen and appreciate her against the refrigerator door.

She sidles up next to me as the guys move the shelves into the store and some of the employees start taking the items off of the current displays.

“Oh, Reece, they’re perfect.”

I grab her waist and pull her to me. After just a few days, the feel and shape of her body is already familiar. “You’re perfect,” I tell her, planting a kiss on her lips.

She responds with a moan, twisting her fingers in the shaggy hair at the back of my neck. I’m overdue for a cut and a shave, but between being with Cleo and building her shelves, that’s one thing that I haven’t made time for.
