South Dakota just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?

Day 585

OK, so maybe ALL of South Dakota doesn’t suck. I am sitting on a cliff in Badlands National Park watching the sunset. Wowee zowee. I sure am glad a bunch of protons and electrons and all that stuff randomly combined to create this scene. Are we lucky or what?

Speaking of random, Dr. Jaska appeared on the airwaves today. It has been so long since she made a public appearance, I figured her Blue Ribbon Commission to Figure Out Who Blew It Up had been disbanded. Dr. Jaska announced today that a group calling itself Crankens Sooner Troopers is being investigated as the potential exploder.

I’m pretty sure I mentioned Trooper Bobby Joe Crankens and the University of Oklahoma football scandal earlier.97 Since Bobby Joe apparently now has dedicated followers, I guess I need to fill in the gaps for you. Wait a minute . . . just saw an American eagle fly across the expanse of rocks beneath me. Wowee zowee.

OK. Back to Crankens. I am not sure if I have mentioned this or not, but both Dad and I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Dad was a dedicated supporter of UT and gave millions of dollars to the university. In fact, I think there are several buildings on campus with his name on them.

Anyway, the University of Oklahoma and UT were big football rivals back in the day. Senior hated the Sooners and was depressed for days when the Okies beat the Longhorns in their annual October football game in Dallas. After the Sooners beat UT five years in a row, Senior became convinced the Okies were cheating, so he commissioned Mac to investigate. Senior brought Mac and me into his office and said, “Mac, those Okies are recruiting all the best high school players in Texas. They have to be paying those studs. No Texas kid who is any good would go to that school just for a scholarship. Figure out what is going on. The Okies aren’t smart enough to hide their tracks from you.”

Senior, as usual, was right on both counts. The University of Oklahoma was paying its players, and the Okies could not hide that fact from Mac. Senior took Mac’s findings and published a report called “Sooner Football: Whores for Scores.” The report confirmed that Oklahoma football players had twenty-four-hour access to a brothel on campus and were paid thousands of dollars a month from the state’s oil royalty fund. Senior held a press conference in which he distributed the report to the media. He also provided pictures of Sooner players cashing checks, as well as video interviews with some of the ladies of the evening.

Senior claimed he did the investigation and report on his own, without any help from the University of Texas, because he did not want anyone to think the report was biased. Everyone who saw the press conference, however, knew that Senior was not an impartial observer or investigator.
