Auditioning for a talent show
TV talent shows are big news. Aside from generating huge viewing figures, they also provide a platform for genuinely talented individuals to show off their skills, which might not have been possible otherwise. Even if you don’t win the competition itself, you may be spotted by a talent scout, so these sorts of auditions are always well attended.
If you are a singer, choosing the correct piece to match your own particular voice is extremely important. You may feel that a belter of a song by Mariah Carey or something recent by Justin Timberlake will show that you have a strong voice and can take on something that requires power. However, choosing a song which is demanding and has been performed by more experienced, indeed sometimes the best singers in the world will more than likely lead to your downfall. Instead, pick a song which will match your natural pitch and show off your vocal range without putting too much stress on your voice. You’ll need to be able to hit a variety of notes without wavering, so make sure you can do so comfortably. Make sure also that your choice of song is appropriate to your age group and personality. It goes without saying that the lyrics of your chosen song should also be appropriate – swearing or explicit lyrics do not impress panels! Also, in some cases, you will only be allowed to sing part of the song, so avoid anything with long instrumental introductions. You only have a brief moment to impress so get to the good bit straight away!
Bear in mind that many auditions now require a singer to perform unaccompanied. So, choose something that you know you can hit the correct notes without any music to guide you.
Another good piece of advice is to hire a vocal coach and with them, practice your chosen song over and over again, in the weeks leading up to the audition. As seen recently on a national talent show, a vocalist was asked to perform another song in addition to the one he had prepared and both the panel and audience waited with baited breath as the singer’s mind went blank and it took a few minutes for him to think of another song. Luckily, he was able to sing this just as well, but you may not be so lucky and make the wrong choice, which could cost you a place in the competition. So, prepare two or even three pieces, in case this happens to you – it’s more frequent than you may think.
It’s not just your voice that will be judged, of course. Your stage presence – your movements and ability to win over an audience and get them involved, is also extremely important. You could have a voice rivalling that of Christina Aguilera, but if you appear to have no personality, it’s not worth a thing. Make sure it comes over, sing your song with feeling and emotion; make the audience feel
