THE TRIP FROM HELL

A piercing shout startled Calhane awake. Glancing around, he saw that he had dozed off while walking again. Taking a bite of Critchmeat, he tried to stay focused. As he stepped past the dead body of a Burrcritch, he shook his head. What a waste. The fur of the Burrcritch had once been a valued commodity for the Menadeen. Now they were left behind, just like all the rest. He had attempted to point out some of the more rare critch to Mandia, but gave up after realizing the folly of it.

Calhane hadn’t thought they would last a single day out here, let alone two weeks. And somehow, by the Maker, they were only losing one or two people a day. Not by the Maker, by those two insane humans ahead of us, he reminded himself. How they had held up this far, he couldn’t guess. But hold on they did. The shouts from the girl came like clockwork, and Calhane was sure they would be resident in his nightmares for a long time to come. If they managed to get out of here alive.

Looking back, he saw Mandia firing arrows off into the darkness, hitting targets he couldn’t even begin to see. It was good that she had something to focus on. He grunted and held back a smile. For the last two weeks, she had been fighting relentlessly.

Calhane shook his head. He had died inside a long time ago. If this was the end, so be it. But Mandia, she was young, with her whole life ahead of her. When her class had been stripped, and she had seen the treeholm burn, he hadn’t been sure she would survive the trauma. At least now she had an outlet for all that pent up rage and regret. He let out a small laugh.

A bad day to be one of the Critch.

He started gathering pieces of Critchmeat from the ground, then carried them over to the Mothers’ palanquin and knocked on the wall. A wooden shutter slid down, and he handed the food over. There were only three palanquins, each designed to hold six Mothers, but now they were forced to hold over ten each.

"We’re moving again," he informed them. The breaks they were forced to take were short, but sleep was not something they could go without, especially for this long of a trip. Behind them huddled the thousands of other Menadeen, tightly packed. He noticed other members of the Skyguard nudging people awake to start the move once more.

Continuing on, he found Iridane forming arrows from a large block of wood they had brought. Giving him a touch on the shoulder, Iridane turned and forced a smile.

"We’re running out of wood to use, I’m afraid," he said, standing up and handing the arrows over to a nearby hunter. "It may come down to hand-to-hand combat before this is done."

Calhane smirked. "If we get that far, I’ll consider it a victory." They were just about two-thirds of the way through, but the last segment of a journey like this was always the hardest.
