I got about fifteen minutes into the show when I heard a noise coming from upstairs. I turned the TV off to listen closer.

“No!” Demi screamed, and I jumped up out of my seat. My heart hammered in my chest as I sped out of the living room and up the stairs. I had no idea what I was going to find, but I didn’t care.

“No!” she screamed again, and I burst through the door to find her thrashing about on her bed.

“Demi!” I hurried over to her, and knelt down on the mattress. “Demi, wake up,” I said softly as I gripped her shoulders, and gently shook, trying to wake her.

“Mom!” she cried as tears rolled down her cheeks. “Frankie, no!”

She hadn’t responded to me so I tried a different approach. “Lydia!”

Demi gasped and woke with a start as my hands still gripped her delicate shoulders. “You’re safe,” I said, repeating what I’d heard from my room. “You’re safe, Demi.”

“Jordan?” Demi’s eyes were wide and terrified as she looked up at me with tears still running down her face. “What are you doing here?”

“I heard you screaming. You were having a nightmare,” I said, releasing her shoulders.

I wiped her tear stained cheeks with my fingertips.

Demi’s lip wobbled, and I knew she was badly shaken from whatever she’d dreamt of. Fresh tears spilled over her eyelids, she screwed them shut, and she turned her head away from me.

“Please go,” Demi whispered, curling up onto her side, her back turned to me.

I don’t think so.

I wasn’t walking away from her in that state, not even to sit downstairs. Instead, I kicked off my shoes and maneuvered myself behind her. I lay on my side, with my head on her pillow. It smelled just like her, and I took a lungful of the sweet scent. I wondered if I was going too far when I lifted my left arm and rested it across her, holding her.

“What are you doing?” Demi whispered. She was so still that if she hadn’t been breathing she could’ve passed for a statue.

“I told you,” I whispered into her ear, and she shivered. “I’m not leaving you on your own.”

I could hear small sobs escaping from Demi, but I didn’t push for answers. I just lay behind her with my arm over her and I knew I didn’t want to be anywhere else.

My jeans became increasingly tighter as I lay next to her. I was hard as stone and I knew it was an inappropriate time, but I couldn’t help it. Demi’s effect on me was getting stronger every single day.

“Jordan?” Demi quietly whispered so I could barely hear her.

“Yeah?” I replied.

“Thank you.”

“What for?”

Demi looked over her shoulder and then turned to face me. I looked into her glistening eyes until she spoke again.

“For caring.” Her voice broke and then she surprised me by curling herself into my chest.

Without hesitation I pulled her tighter towards me, and lifted my hand to stroke her hair. Demi’s shoulders shook and I held her as she wept.
