At home the next day, Ryan thought about Valeria’s words and her determination to avoid all talk of December 21. He was more convinced than ever that she actually did know something that others had overlooked, and that she had no intention of sharing her information with anyone but George. He also was perplexed by the strange calmness she and George had exhibited, as if some inner struggle had been resolved and they were at ease with living in expectation of some decisive change ahead. Was this just the natural result of living like retirees? Before, they had been up to their necks in dealing with one problem after another, planning trips, scheduling and attending meetings. Now they actually had time to relax and read and think. Who wouldn’t be more at peace?

Yet Ryan couldn’t imagine that there wasn’t something else going on. In his experience, thinking brought with it doubts, uncertainty and insecurity. And he knew plenty of that—at times, he thought he was going crazy. He missed the days when his battles in the world of high finance kept his mind completely focused on earning as much as he could while exploiting the system. Now when he thought back on those times, he even had momentary second thoughts. Had he been dishonest? Was taking advantage of the weakness of others a good or a bad thing? Back then he never would have posed these questions. But now he began to wonder, and it bothered him.

He tried to dismiss such thoughts as foolish musings, but worried that even having them meant that there was something wrong.

He yearned for something—anything—to happen that would justify all his planning and allow him to unveil his know-how, which now seemed to be wasting away in anticipation of the longed-for conclusion. He felt as if he were in an isolation ward, keeping himself fit with mental exercises that he had no opportunity to put into practice. In expectation of the big event, he had withdrawn from the daily grind of a profession that would have granted him the chance to act and manipulate the system.

Now he was a man apart, watching the evolution of his high-finance homeland from the outside, primed to make his comeback when the world would be forced to adopt a new set of rules.

This wait was mandatory for his future survival. If he returned before the scenario changed, he would self-destruct and miss any chance at exploiting the shift. Yet wasn’t that just what other people before him had done, prior to going on to wield great power?

For Ryan, one example that came to mind was Lenin, who lived in exile for many years with no opportunities to put his radical ideas into action. Patience, readiness, focus and a lust for power had sustained him until his moment in history came in the wake of the collapse of the Russian Empire at the end of World War I, when he traveled across Europe and arrived in Moscow, prepared to lead the Bolshevik Revolution.
