When she eventually awoke, the music was still playing softly but, instead of being upright in her seat, she was angled to one side, her head resting on Jonas’s shoulder. Aimi knew she ought to move, but couldn’t quite bring herself to do so right away. Being close to him like this meant every breath she took brought with it the scent of him and, though she knew it was a mistake, she couldn’t help indulging herself for a moment. There was the subtle fragrance of his cologne and, beneath it, another that was the pure male scent she recalled so very vividly from last night.

They took a bend and she was fascinated by the way Jonas’s hands moved on the steering-wheel. They were long-fingered, capable, and it didn’t take much effort to recall them moving over her body, arousing her to a fever-pitch of need. The sensual thought sent heat racing through her veins, increasing her heartbeat and shortening her breath in a flash.

Finally alarm bells went off in her head, reminding her that she was flirting with danger through her indulgent thoughts. She was supposed to be dampening down her desire for the man, not stoking the flames! It was the spur she needed to move and she sat up abruptly, putting as much space between them as she could.

Jonas took his eyes off the road long enough to glance at her quizzically. ‘Bad dream?’ he asked as he returned his gaze to the road ahead.

She almost laughed, for the whole situation between them was like a bad dream. ‘You shouldn’t have let me fall asleep on you. You should have given me a nudge,’ she returned, hoping he hadn’t guessed what had been going through her mind.

‘You looked too comfortable,’ Jonas observed with a shrug of the shoulders.

She had been comfortable—very! ‘I never would have done it had I known,’ she explained, needing to make sure he knew she hadn’t changed her mind.

‘I know, which is why I left you,’ he said lightly, then flashed her a rakish grin. ‘I was indulging myself. I liked having you so close to me,’ he confessed flirtatiously.

‘Well, I hope you made the most of it, it’s the last time it will happen,’ she told him firmly, only to hear amusement in his voice when he answered.

‘So you keep telling me. Who are you trying to convince—me or yourself?’

Aimi didn’t answer, for the truth was she supposed she was trying to convince both of them. Everything was going wrong. Part of her didn’t want to want him, whilst the other wanted to revel in it. To experience everything. To know some joy for however long it lasted. She did know that the more she was with him, the harder it was going to be to walk away. Yet that wanton side kept asking why she had to walk away at all. Her conscience told her why she should but, as more time went by, she didn’t know if she could. Last night, everything had seemed so simple, yet it was anything but.
