The howl of the coyotes broke the silence and serene warmth of the campfire. There, all were surrounded by saddles and blankets. Joe was smoking a rolled cigarette, preoccupied with burning the boys’ names onto leather patches with his belt knife. One of the boys turned in his blanket, smiled, and gleamed as he spoke to the other figure across from him. “My father can handle any situation,” he said proudly.

“Seems so,” stated the young man. “Matter a fact, your pa is one reason I am goin’ along with y’all. Yessir, he’s got quite a reputation for takin’ care of things and doin’ it without any nonsense.”

Then Joe called out, “You boys go back to sleep. I’ll be waking you up soon enough for your turn at watch.”

“Yessir,” all four answered. Then again in unison, a slight laugh broke out, knowing that all were listening. Joe grinned and shook his head slightly as he looked upward, as if he were praying for guidance.
