After we put our boxes in the cab of his truck, we headed to Michael’s Deli. Once we’re inside, it smells even better than I remembered. Owen orders for us and then we grab seats at an empty table off to the side.

“What time are you leaving for home?”

“I usually wait until around seven, unless my parents have plans and need me to be there sooner.”

“You go home every weekend?”

“Yep.”

“Do you mind me asking why? Do your parents make you go?” I’m slightly annoyed by his question and I don’t know why.

“No, I don’t have to go home. I want to. I’m not sure why that’s so weird to you.”

“Wait a minute. I never said it was weird. I only asked why you do.”

“I like to spend time with my family. Seeing them helps me to keep driving forward when school seems like too much.” When being away from Beatrice seems to be more than I can bear.

“You definitely have a hefty course load. Were you the valedictorian at your high school?”

“No, I was third. The two students ahead of me were superhuman when it came to test taking. They would get a perfect score every time.”

“And you didn’t?” He seems amazed that I might make mistakes.

“Not like they did.”

“Well, it seems like you did well for yourself. Was Boston University your first choice?”

“I wanted to go to Harvard, but they didn’t offer me a scholarship and that tuition is a lot to swing. My parents advised me not to go into six figure debt over college before I even enter the workplace.”

“You got a scholarship to B.U.?”

“Yeah, they pay my tuition fully. And I pay for the apartment.”

“You have a job?”

“I mean my parents and my uncle pay.”

Our number gets called out and Owen springs up from his chair. “Be right back.”

I grab napkins from the dispenser and place some on the middle of our table. I’m going to need them for the Thanksgiving Feast sandwich I’ve got coming. When I read the menu and saw hot turkey breast with homemade stuffing and cranberry sauce on a sub roll, I knew I had to try it.

Owen sets a plate in front of me with a huge sandwich filling up most of the space. “Oh, wow. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this baby. This is my Thanksgiving warm up.”

He sets his plate down and sits across from me. “What’s yours again?”

“I got a corned beef Reuben. It’s what they’re known for.”

Neither one of us says another word until at least half of our sandwiches are gone, and then I sit back with a groan. “I need a break.” I pat my stomach.

He laughs, placing his sandwich down on the plate. “You can get the rest wrapped up for later. You can have a snack if you get stuck in traffic.”

I point at him. “You know, that’s a great idea. It’s a sure bet I’ll hit rush hour traffic even if I leave at a later hour.”

He pushes his plate to the side and leans forward on the table.
