Chapter Six
âA couple of us are going for drinks,â Anna said to Nixon. âYou should come. Itâll be fun.â
It had been a while since Nixon had hung out with his coworkers. After the past week with the Cash incident, finding out vampires were real, and being mated, a drink was exactly what he needed. It wouldnât be dark for at least two hours, and Nixon had time to kill before Joaquin would return to the apartment.
Because he hadnât returned this morning, and that worried Nixon. He just wished heâd remembered to get his mateâs phone number, but the last twenty-four hours had been a whirlwind.
To take his mind off his concern, he smiled at Anna. âSure.â
âSweet,â she said. âWeâre heading to Shinedown. Since you donât have a car, do you want to ride with me?â
On most days it didnât bother Nixon that he didnât own a ride. He took the bus when he needed to go somewhere too far to walk. Or he called an Uber. Since getting a ride from Anna would be free, he nodded. âLet me clock out.â
âIâll meet you by the exit.â She walked away, and now Nixon was pretty stoked about hanging out and letting his hair down, so to speak. It had been a rough few days, and a lot had changed in his life. Some of it not for the better.
Like the Cash part. Nixon still wanted to strangle Clinton for getting into him this mess in the first place, but the blame was on his own shoulders. He could have said no. He hadnât because heâd needed the money. It wasnât cheap to live on your own, and no way was he moving back in with his mom. She was sweet, but a guy had to stand on his own two feet.
Even if the ground under him was shaky.
The ride was pretty quick, and before Nixon knew it, they were stepping inside the bar. He liked Shinedown. Heâd been there a couple of times before, and they served pretty decent food. They spotted their other coworkers at a back table, drinks in hand. That was fast.
When Nixon took a seat, a waitress came over. He was going to stick to just a beer, and then he recalled he had Joaquinâs credit card. Heâd said for Nixon to use it if he was in a bind. This didnât really constitute a bind, but for once, he wanted to order what he wanted without having to watch his pennies.
So Nixon ordered three dozen wings and two pitchers of beer. Everyone else always bought rounds. It was about damn time he did, too.
âSweet,â Scott said. âThanks for getting this round, Nixon.â
Scott, a gangly guy with a pronounced Adamâs apple and dull brown hair, kind of reminded Nixon of Gumby. He was tall with big eyes, a wide mouth, and his back was completely flat with no ass whatsoever.
There was Anna, who was short, but curvy. Her dark hair was tied up in a bun, but she let it down and shook it out.
