Jill paced the floor of the doctor’s office and felt sure they forgot about her. Then the door opened and a woman about her age with birdlike proportions smiled politely. She apologized for keeping her waiting.

With an owl like stare from light gray eyes, Doctor Alexandra Raymond began to speak as she sat down behind her desk. “Well, Mrs. Marrack-Ridge, I’m pleased to inform you that all the tests we’ve carried out have proved excellent. Your current health status is first-rate and we see no reason why you can’t be implanted and have a positive result. Obviously there are no guarantees, of course.”

Jill felt her stomach double flip at the news. It was wonderful. “I wasn’t sure, it’s been three years and I’m older...,” Jill trailed off.

The doctor consulted the notes. “You were seen by a prominent Harley street consultant the last time. May I ask why not this time?”

Jill wondered when that might come up. Elise had paid all the medical bills the last time. This she wanted to do herself. Besides Elise might be horrified at her decision to have another child and at least this way Elise wouldn’t feel guilty, as she’d had no part in the process. “Circumstances have changed.” It was the truth.

The doctor nodded. “We have an excellent facility here and I’m sure there won’t be any problem. Do you want to arrange the date for the first session to choose a donor?”

Jill gazed at the doctor in surprise, taken aback by the suddenness of the possibility. “I suppose, well yes, yes, I do.”

Doctor Raymond consulted her diary. “The next available session I have is for tomorrow at three. Is that any good to you?"

Jill nodded, unable to be articulate.

“Excellent. I know the selection process is the most important part. I’m assuming your partner be at the next session.”

“What time do I...we need to be here?" Jill asked.

The owl like eyes scrunched up. “Two-thirty. As you’ve done this before, it won’t be so nerve wracking, I suspect."

Ten minutes later Jill was walking aimlessly down the street where the consulting rooms of the doctor were. Tomorrow she would be choosing the genetic makeup of her second child and Elise wouldn’t be part of that process. It hurt her, but at the same time she felt exhilarated.

Her mind focused on the last call she’d received from Elise, a week ago. Elise wanted to speak with Tegan, explaining that she was called away on business but that when she came back, they’d spend time together. When Jill had taken the phone from Tegan, Elise had been polite. Too polite, from Jill’s point of view, and she wondered if things were too complicated now, with their having slept together. Maybe it wasn’t that but Megan Dutton-God, she hated the mention of her name. It brought out the jealous streak in her.

Jill glanced at the street name. Then wondered how to spend the next twenty-four hours and decided to visit her old neighborhood. In particular the pub she and the gang used to hang out in.
