I hear the glasses clinking and giggles starting before I see my kitchen demolished with what I’m assuming was good intentions. I watch my guests, coated in flour, enjoying their mimosas as they chat and cut and bake cookies. The kitchen, hell, the whole house, can feel their cheery spirits. It makes me smile, and I watch as Belle dusts flour on her cheek while brushing hair from her face. I feel the urge to taste the salt and sugar from the cookie mix from that silky spot.

Instead, I’m being handed a glass of champagne with a splash of orange juice as Candy and Noelle pull me into the room. They hold up their glasses as if to cheers but I stop them, clearing my throat for a proper toast. I set my eyes on Belle as I speak.

“Like Bette Davis once said, ‘There comes a time in every woman’s life when the only thing that helps is a glass of champagne.’ But I would also add -- and great friends.”

Our glasses meet, some drink is spilled, and cheers are hollered at the end of my toast. I smile at Belle who smiles back, her head tipped adorably.

Soon we are alone. The others take their drinks and some cookies out onto the heated porch to enjoy the sunrise, grabbing blankets to wrap around them to fend off the cold.

I start on breakfast, not expecting anyone to live off cookies for the first meal of the day. Belle wordlessly, joins me, cutting up fruit while I throw bacon in the pan. I turn around and want to wrap my arms around her, pull her so close I fuse our molecules. I want to nuzzle my unshaved face against her flour coated cheek, smelling the scent of happiness. I want to slide my hands up her pajamas, tickling the warm supple skin beneath the cute patterned cloth of the flannel.

And it’s in that moment, I know, without a doubt, that I want this woman.

I take a step towards her, opening my mouth to confess my need to touch her when the back door opens.

“Jackie,” I say, in dismay greeting my employee.

Were we always going to be interrupted? Would it always be an almost? And maybe a never.

“Morning, Cohen,” she says sweetly, her blonde hair bouncing. She’s got to be the same age as Belle, though excessive tanning booths and a pack-a-day habit have obviously been harder on Jackie’s appearance.

Jackie stops in her tracks, blinking, recognizing Belle slowly. “Oh my god, Belle Monahan?! It’s been ages, girl!”

She seizes Belle in a hug, making her eyes turn to the size of saucers and her posture tense up. Jackie lets her go and moves around the kitchen. As my employee, Jackie’s essentially the cleaning staff. She takes over once the guests leave and maintains the other areas though she doesn’t mind complaining about the labor…every day. I hired her as a favor to a friend in Denver, after he helped me find this place, knowing I needed to get away.
