CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

When are you going to talk to her about the extra do-dads on the car?” I whispered as we stepped into Corinne’s studio around 7 am. In keeping with all the things I’d never done before, getting up that early on a Saturday is typically a cardinal sin—especially after being up half the night. Still, my body and brain found the early hour exhilarating for some reason. Maybe it was my surroundings.

“I don’t know.” Galen laced his fingers through mine. “After the initial shock, I got to thinking, maybe it’s not my business.” And that was one of the things that appealed to me about Galen: I couldn’t imagine him not being gracious over rethinking his choices.

“It isn’t,” I gave him. “But I still think you should talk to her. In case she got wrapped up in something not so good, thanks to Seth.” Then I shut up as Corinne drew near.

“Corinne’s an open book. She would have told Katherine if not everyone else.”

I nodded and took in the studio once more. Corinne’s glass work was stunning. Lipped shelves ran down three walls, one for works in progress, one for those that inspired her most, and one to hold those on sale or created on commission. The sconces and table lamps caught the eye and held it there to take in the vibrant colors of her reverse-glass artistry. When it came right down to it, I absolutely had to cover her for Doorways. I had found the thin metallic outlines present on many of the pieces elegant, only now I see that’s not what I meant. There was the faintest hint of a uniform waviness to the lines that made her work rather ethereal. It was a truly unique look, one I can’t imagine anyone having the patience to execute. I lifted my Nikon and snapped away.

“Move over, Da Vinci. Here comes Corinne Zabriese,” I found myself gushing.

Corinne beamed and leaned in to side hug me. “Let’s not get carried away,” she said. But I could see the pride in her eyes, hear it in her voice. For some reason, I wanted it to stay there; she deserved confidence.

“Unfortunately, I screwed up. I was going to surprise you with a painting class. Then, at some point last night the coyotes woke me, and I had a mild panic attack.”

I turned to Galen and poked him. “See?”

He caught my finger and didn’t let go. “No. Corinne often wakes with panic attacks. The coyotes had nothing to do with it.”

“Trust me, I’m not scared of coyotes in the least,” she agreed.

Galen absently brought my hand to his lips and kissed my knuckles. “In fact, when she was nine, she walked an injured one she named Fangs straight into the house, convinced that if we house-trained him, we could love the wild out of him.”

“Yikes!”

“Yeah ... now we call him Avocado.”

“Stop!” I laughed.

Corinne kicked a block beneath the door to prop it open. “I have to admit I gave this family way more grief than they deserved for calling Wildlife Control.
