Chapter Nineteen

REMINGTON ARRIVED AT the coffee shop at ten o’clock in the morning, just like he did every Monday. If he didn’t get there early, his mother would manipulate every second of his time and he wouldn’t have a chance to chat with Hilary, the only eligible woman in town at the moment who was of any quality.

Hilary was the daughter of Isabella Monks, the only other contender for his seat on council. Isabella was also the woman he’d slept with in his early twenties. Fortunately for him, both he and Isabella had been engaged at the time, to other partners. So, they had an equal amount of dirt on each other.

A stalemate in what could have otherwise been career-damaging information.

“Morning Hilary.” He offered her his well-practiced smile.

“Good morning to you too, Remmy.” She was the only person he’d ever let shorten his name. “You want coffee or tea today?”

“Coffee please, and you better make it a strong one. Mother was in a bit of a tiz this morning.”

Hilary’s smile could stop traffic. Her figure too. Why on earth she’d stayed in Whispering Hills was a mystery to him. The town’s demographic had more than sixty-five percent of the population at over fifty-five years of age. Twenty percent were in his age bracket and the remaining fifteen percent were thirty and under and stupid enough to stick around.

He’d have left years ago if he hadn’t thought his political ambitions would benefit from improving the town. Come five years from now, they’d be begging him to move to LA, or maybe San Fran, or if he dreamed big, like he tended to do, New York would be calling. For now though, he had to focus on the prize. And that was getting Catapult Defense Systems settled and the town’s population growing again.

A screech of tires announced his mother running up the curb again as she yanked her twenty-year-old Toyota Camry into the parking space. She touched up her lipstick in the rear mirror and adjusted her hair before she climbed from the vehicle.

He was surprised by his mother’s outfit choice for today. The dress was way over the top for their bi-weekly coffee. It meant that whatever gossip she was carrying, it was good enough to keep her busy right through the day. She’d be bouncing from friendly cups of coffee with every woman in town until she moved on to sherry in the evening. His mother’s predictability was outstanding.

She barely glanced Hilary’s way as she called out her drink order. “Green tea luvvy, and just a cup today, I have many people to see.” She hustled through the chairs like a woman racing into the Black Friday Sales and her purse banged against her hip with each step.

“Can’t stay long, sweet.” She cupped Remington’s face and planted a kiss on each cheek.

“That’s okay, Mom, I have loads—”

“Oh, I bet you do. Can you believe it?” She tossed her purse onto the table and shuffled into her chair.

“Believe what?”

Her eyes bulged in an expression he’d seen a million times before, yet this one was much more exaggerated.
