Kim took a glass of wine from Michelle and smiled woodenly. Michelle was saying something to her about her dress, and Kim was answering her, but her mind was all over the place. Her face felt hot, and she was resisting the urge to fold her arms around herself and try to disappear into the woodwork, as well as trying to keep her eyes from darting all over the place out of curiosity.

She didn’t want to look like what she was: a person who had never even thought parties “of this kind” actually existed until about a week ago.

The wine turned out to be champagne, which Kim hated, but she drank it anyway, grateful to have something to do with her hands. Len had guided her into the party with his hand flat on her back, right where the dress dipped low, so his skin was hot on her spine and his hand was the only thing she could feel, as he steered her through the house, introducing her to people.

Everyone had clothes on. Everyone had clothes on and looked extremely normal, but somehow Kim could feel a difference in the ambiance of this party. It was hard to say what was different about it, compared to other parties. It was just the vibe: the potential for sex was hanging in the air somehow. Everyone touched each other in a lingering way, just a little longer, a little more suggestively, than at an ordinary party.

Everyone – men and women – that Len introduced her to had moved their eyes salaciously over her body, and then smiled, and then said something like, “I hope to see you later.”

She had found herself very unexpectedly grateful to Len, who had shook his head and commented that she was just an observer at each of these interactions. It only made her feelings for Len more confusing, since he was being unexpectedly thoughtful (not a word she’d have ever thought she’d consider using in relation to Len). She felt protected by him, rather than annoyed into her senseless, almost competitive state with him.

Michelle was gushing about Kim’s dress. Kim was trying not to look around, but she wanted to see what was happening around her. How long would the party be like this, just a regular party with people talking and drinking? Would they… she didn’t know, play games, or ring a bell, or clap hands to indicate that the party was “that kind” of party? Not knowing was making her stomach coil even tighter.

“Kim,” Len announced suddenly, “got this dress from her gym guy.”

Michelle was drinking some champagne and raised her eyebrows over her glass. She was wearing a white dress that looked as if it had been painted onto her, and Kim was noticing for the first time that it was made of a pearly, semi-transparent material that Michelle’s tan skin showed right through.
