Chapter Eight

Jacob all but preened. He felt silly doing it but hell, having a mate was a big thing in anyone’s life. The shock on Christian’s and Evan’s faces was a picture. He could imagine what they were thinking, and if he hadn’t started getting an irritating itch on the back of his neck, he wouldn’t have believed it either. He lifted one hand to scratch there, making sure Frankie saw him. Frankie beamed, and goddamn it, Jacob wanted to go over there and kiss the life out of him.

“Jacob’s your mate?” Evan asked, staring at Frankie with wide eyes and his mouth open.

“He is,” Frankie said. “Hard to believe, I know. A wolf and lion, destined to be mates? Weird, but there you have it. I’m not arguing with fate. She can be a bitch at times, so staying on her good side is what I’m all about.”

“So let me get this straight.” Christian frowned hard. “A lion and a wolf? I mean, what the ever-loving hell? It isn’t possible, surely.”

“Why not?” Jacob asked quietly.

All heads turned to him. Far from feeling self-conscious, he had a kernel of proudness inside him that was growing bigger by the second.

“It’s not like we can reproduce, is it, so why should it be a problem?” Jacob wondered then what would be created if a male and female were involved in the lion-wolf scenario.

“It would be a problem,” Dillon said. “We know of some cross-bred cubs—they’re lion and wolf. They’re perfect, except they can’t shift. They have the need to, but their bodies won’t allow it. They’re in a lot of discomfort at times, but they’re being taken care of and medication is helping with the pain when they can’t shift.” He smiled. “But we’re getting off topic.”

“So you’ve bonded?” Christian asked, clearly wanting to understand this even though there were more pressing things to discuss. Maybe it was taking his mind off the fight.

Jacob blushed. Frankie didn’t.

“We have,” Jacob said. “Not that you needed to know that.”

“Of course we needed to know,” Christian said. “Because it can only help during the fight. You two will be able to communicate via thought, and that’s a major advantage for us all.”

“He’s right,” Sergeant said. “You can hear each other’s thoughts, can’t you?”

Fuck it.

“No.” Jacob couldn’t look at Frankie. He felt like he’d let him down. “I’ve only just got the itchy neck. Came on suddenly. Now I want to rip my skin off.”

“That’s your protective side coming to the fore.” Dillon nodded, seeming pleased. “You know danger is coming, and your body is getting you ready, preparing you to protect Frankie. Excellent.”

“But what about the silent speech?” Frankie asked. “How long do you reckon that will take to get through to us? We don’t even know if we’ll get that luxury because we’re a mixed match.”

“Who knows?” Sergeant shrugged. “But what matters is you’re bonded, that you’re true mates. You have a lifetime to wait for silent speech, and if it doesn’t come, so what? That’s what our mouths are for, talking.
