Chapter 19
“You can really do it, can’t you?”
It had not really been a question. Jimmy was only saying what he already believed.
It was dark in the jail. Only a handful of small lights kept it from being pitch black. It was probably somewhere around midnight but it was impossible for Tar to tell. Time had dragged the rest of the afternoon before the prisoners had been fed. That had made for an interesting time. Several fights broke out over food. Turbo’s silent friend had brought them both a sandwich but Tar was sure none of the other young boys had gotten anything to eat.
He realized he and Jimmy were lucky. They had food in their bellies and now they were lying on bunks in one of the cells. He could hear a few boys sobbing in the dark and a couple of them had yelled out earlier. He did not want to think about what might have happened to them or where they were sleeping.
“Yeah,” he finally answered Jimmy.
“Automagically? Just touch it and it’s app again?”
“Yeah.”
There was a pause in the dark before Jimmy whispered again. “Then what happened with the tech that shirt gave us? Was it too fragged?”
“Maybe,” answered Tar. “Probably the battery was just dead or there wasn’t one in it.”
“So, if it’s got juice, you can fix it?”
“Unless something is hard broke.”
“Chilly,” breathed Jimmy.
Tar stared at the dark ceiling and listened to Jimmy’s breathing as the boy drifted to sleep. He was on the verge of joining him when he felt—more than he heard or saw—a shadow enter the cell. He held his breath and eased closer against the wall.
“You guys awake?” Turbo whispered.
“I am,” answered Tar. “I think Jimmy’s out.”
“That’s okay, let ‘em sleep.” The voice moved closer. “This is what I got. Some big shirt is coming tomorrow to look all the young guys over. So we’ll have to move fast in the morning.” Turbo paused and gave a low chuckle. “Never thought I’d be planning a break for a fixer. Guess you just never know.” Another chuckle. “How long does it take you to do your thing?”
Tar decided he needed to trust the man, that is, if he wanted any chance of getting away before more Black Shirts arrived. He did not even want to think about the bald man but he feared he was the one coming to the jail.
“Depends,” he said. “Some things take longer.”
“How ‘bout a lock?”
Tar let out a breath of relief. “One of the metal locks on a door? A couple of seconds.”
“Chilly,” Turbo said. “I tell ya, kid, if you can do it that fast you can come work for me anytime you want. Anyway, tomorrow morning at breakfast, sit as far away from where you came into the holding area as possible. Along the back wall is a prisoner exchange and visitor area. A few buddies and me are going to start a pummel while everybody’s eating. If it gets big enough they’ll send in guards to settle it down, which means they’ll come in from the front and the back.
