“Where to?” the chauffeur of the sleek black sedan that just pulled up asks as we climb in. It’s a luxury car, more lavish than I’ve ever seen. And this is just Jack’s traveling car for the road.

“Uh…” I say, wracking my brain to figure out where she might have been. “I saw...a building with a bunch of eyes on it in the background, it was weird, and some kind of fruit stand on the street corner.”

“Ah!” says the driver to my surprise, “the Bos en Lommerweg. My sister lives there.”

Jack hands the driver a handful of hundred Euro bills, nodding to him. “Hurry.”

We peel away from the curb and rocket across town towards our destination. Within a few minutes, I yell, “Stop the car!” as Casey comes into view. She’s stumbling from her drunkenness, and there’s a group of about four guys behind her, drunkenly jeering at her, and I know the aggression in their body language.

I hear a low, menacing sound from Jack as the car comes to a halt, and before I can react, he springs out of the car and races toward them.

I hear him shouting at them in Dutch, and I don’t know what they’re saying, but one of the youth slurs something back as he staggers forward to throw a punch at him. To my surprise, Jack catches the man’s fist, stopping him cold as he twists his arm behind his back and throws him back to his friends, snarling something else and pointing for them to get out. It looks like the group is about to keep up the jeering, but eventually, they shuffle off, leaving Casey looking at Jack and me in shock as I step out of the car.

She collapses into my arms wordlessly as I run forward to catch her. “She’s out cold,” I say as Jack steps forward and picks her up, nodding.

“Those men were about to do something terrible,” he says. “Let’s get you both back to my room.”
