HAWK EYE
Maria kept feeding June’s backhand, hitting the ball cross court or down the line as close to the corner as possible, hard and flat. She took the first game in less than two minutes and the set in just over ten.
“Oh gosh!” June gasped. “Shall we play another set, and then have some lunch?”
Maria nodded. She had barely broken sweat.
June took up position at the baseline, ready to serve. “I think I need to sort out my backhand, it’s dreadful. I can’t believe it. I’ve had so many backhand lessons, but maybe I should switch to a double backhand, what do you think? Yours is super.”
June was a tough businesswoman. She had built up JJ PR from scratch and run it with an iron fist for the past eight years. But on a tennis court she was a completely different person. The minute she got a racket in her hand, she turned into this giggling schoolgirl who seemed to get hugely surprised every time the ball came back at her.
Maria had seen this many times before. People reacted in different ways on court. Some become quite aggressive, swearing like troopers, arguing every point, challenging line calls and sometimes even aiming their shots at the other person.
In June’s case, all her neuroses came out and she revealed a stunning lack of focus. Off court that would surely have sunk her company years ago. But it was fun to watch. Occasionally, June would punch the air if her opponent missed an easy shot – not quite tennis etiquette, but often it was her only hope of winning a point.
Maria, on the other hand, was made of stronger stuff, if only on court. She kept her frustrations to herself, never showing her opponent how she was feeling whether she was winning or losing. Her energy, positive or negative, was channelled into the game. On court, Maria was a winner. She hadn’t been nicknamed Mini-Sharapova for nothing.
It was her father who taught her to contain her emotions when they starting playing over fifteen years ago. She wasn’t much older than five when he gave Maria her first racket and one of his most important rules was to never show the opponent if you’re struggling.
“You’re just giving them an advantage,” he said. “It will boost their confidence if they see you’re not happy with your game. Show them nothing.”
So Maria had perfected the cool vibe and knew how to focus on winning the next point rather than analyse why she had lost the previous one. Still, she remembered hammering a forehand back at her father with such anger and power it became clear for the entire family that tennis was the game for her.
June’s serve was interrupted when a ball from the neighbouring court rolled in front of her feet. It belonged to Angus Dickinson, another member of Bedford Square tennis club, who was playing doubles with his regular gang of City high fliers.
Angus was a new club member and its wealthiest by far, appearing as number one hundred and something on the Rich List.
