Chapter 16
âLooks like your friend Carmen lied,â said Plum gleefully.
It had taken all of her self-control to wait until they were in the lobby to rub it in Juan Kevinâs face. What would he say now about his precious Carmen?
He looked as if he was about to defend her but conceded, âShe was less than forthcoming.â
âWhy do you think she lied?â
âShe did not lie,â he said. âShe just didnât tell us everything.â
âThatâs lying,â trilled Plum.
âIt appears that no one is telling us the whole story. Jason never mentioned that Nick had brought Carmen back to his villa.â
âYes, everyone is a liar. And now everyone has a motive, and they are all suspects.â
Juan Kevin didnât reply but continued walking towards his car, his jaw set firmly. Plum suddenly felt guilty. It wasnât kind to taunt Juan Kevin about Carmen. Maybe he really was in love with her and his heart was broken. She decided to drop it.
âWell, that Kirstie certainly keeps Jason on a short leash,â she said, attempting to steer the subject away from Carmen.
âYes. I wonder if he has given her reason to be so controlling.â
âMaybe. I honestly question what he sees in her. Why would he marry her?â said Plum. âI once had a boyfriend who used to say there are more attractive single women in New York than grains of sand on the beach here. He could find one blindfolded.â
âPerhaps her âvery important fatherâ is attractive to him.â
âGood point. She sounds wealthy.â
They continued in silence. Plumâs sunburn was feeling itchy and uncomfortable, and she was ready to take a cool bath and lather more aloe on her skin. But she really felt as if they were on to something and wasnât sure they could afford to call it quits for the night. Although Juan Kevin was probably eager to get rid of her and drown his sorrows over his beloved Carmen.
âIf this father is very powerful, then we donât have much time,â said Juan Kevin. âWe need more answers before Jason leaves the island. I think we need to return to Coconuts and reinterview everyone there.â
âAgreed,â said Plum.
âIâll pick you up at eight. No need to drive your loaner.â
âThank you. Iâll do anything to avoid that jalopy.â

Coconuts was busy, and Plum and Juan Kevin had to wade their way through throngs of people at the bar to order a drink. Plum was jostled by a beer-bellied man in a tank top who almost sent her white wine flying.
âWatch it,â she snapped at him.
âEase up, sweetie,â said the tattooed woman standing with him. She had a brittle, hard face and wore the kind of short denim overalls that one might find on a cast member of a reality show about teen grandmothers.
Juan Kevin led Plum to a table in the back corner that had a Reserved for Management sign on it and motioned for her to sit down.
âThe perks of working at the resort,â said Juan Kevin.
âVery nice,â said Plum, settling into her seat. âIt looks like the circus is in town.
