“In my head, I do everything right, When you call, I forgive, and I fight.” — Lorde, Supercut.

I thought long and hard about what other sculptures I wanted to make. They would be a bonus to the showing, so there was no real pressure to finish them.

I knew I wanted to perfect the swordfish, but what else?

Deep inside, I already knew what I felt like making—a statement.

I only had time to do one, so I started the sculpture I felt compelled to make.

I second guessed my decision from the moment I began. I know why I didn’t make this before—denial—but the idea, the image, wouldn’t leave my mind. Maybe I wouldn’t take it to the gallery, even if I finished it, maybe I would but wouldn’t offer it for sale.

Within a week, the sculpture was more than half-done. A visual representation of my longing for Adam.

Glenn caught on to how much “the thing with the closeted guy”—as we’d come to call the whole situation—affected me, so he made a point every day to hang out with me for an hour, sometimes more, sometimes less, we went running together most days now.

One of the best distractions was when he came home from a meeting with his advisor and told me his request had been approved. He wanted to start his master's while still doing his bachelor's and he needed approval from a bunch of people because he has a full academic scholarship. They approved it, so he’ll start classes for his master's next semester, and at the end of his junior year, he’d have his double major and his master's degree.

We celebrated with Josie and Bennett.

It got me thinking about how, eventually, I’ll have to live separately from Glenn. I don't feel ready for that, but Glenn wants to go do his Ph.D. at MIT and hopefully stay there to teach. I don’t want to live in Boston. Nothing against the city. I just don’t think it’s the place for me, but, now that I’m thinking about it, maybe it is the right place for him.

Oh, well, that’s tomorrow’s problem. I’ll find a way to make the thought of Glenn moving away only bring me happiness and pride for him. Glenn deserves to achieve all his dreams after how hard he’s worked and the childhood he had. As far as I’m concerned, if things were as they should be, the rest of Glenn’s life will smell of roses and rainbows every day.

A few days later, I’m the one who arrives home with happy news. One of my professors took the time to congratulate me on my work in his class and told me he believed I had a lot of potential and it’s clear this is my calling.

Hearing him say that brought tears to my eyes. It also made me stiffen my spine and stand taller. I’m working hard to achieve my dreams, and I want to keep improving.

Adam never stays out of my mind for long. I haven’t gone to any of his games, but I couldn’t resist watching the highlights.
