The trip didn’t take long once they caught the bus, but going through the downtown area made dinner less of a priority. Damaged cars were still waiting to be towed, some of the businesses were shut down due to damage, and even the bus they took was missing a few seats. That fact forced them to stand along the edge of the open layout, leaving them to endure the chilled air. Once more, he forgot his jacket, so he asked Sivelle if she could get Eva to send it to his dorm room for him.

The comic book store was open, thankfully, and it brought back some memories. The irony wasn’t lost on him. He’d tried to start a Masters of Magic collection on Earth, but no one had ever heard of the brand. He was doing the exact same thing, albeit in a different world, and for far different reasons.

“You want me to ask about them, or do you just want to look around?” Sivelle asked, nodding over her shoulder toward the counter. A blonde-haired Drellon was busy with some purchases, so he shook his head and nodded toward the middle of the store. While comics were never his thing, he wouldn’t mind the chance to compare Stradus comics to Earth’s.

The middle of the store held thousands of comics in boxes on tables, just like on Earth. It was surreal though. Instead of brand names like Marvel, DC, or Darkhorse, he found stuff called AC, Spiral, and Sinister. The Sinister brand looked promising as he flipped through the options. Every cover was dark, evil, and threatened to contain violence. The near-naked Drellon woman on the front of one was covered with blood, holding a spine in one hand, and a heart in her other. The blood didn’t cover everything though. Not only were her tits massive, but perky, which only worked in fiction.

The store didn’t just sell comics. All sorts of memorabilia lined the walls. T-shirts, posters, action figures, lunchboxes, board games, thick novels, and dozens of other categories filled up every inch of the place. It was nerd heaven, truly, but that left him feeling a bit guilty. Bobby would have loved the place. Too bad he was doing twenty years in prison on Earth.

Not that buying him a few dozen comics would ever see him forgiving me, he sighed internally before moving to the taller shelves in the corner. He wasn’t surprised to discover that they were filled with thick graphic novels, normal books, and an occasional figure set. It wasn’t what he was looking for, so he skimmed through them until he found what he was looking for on the wall beyond the tall shelves. Playing cards.

“Now we’re talking.”

“And who are we talking to?”

He didn’t realize somebody was around, which was weird since old habits had him keeping track of his surroundings at all times. Liam whipped around to see the Drellon woman from the counter smirking at him before discretely looking at the wall he was getting ready to check out.
