Chapter 12

Beneath the Cotton Candy Clouds

//Happy Happy Fun Land//

//Time: 3:00 pm//

Grey stood in the courtyard, watching as the long row of pirates slowly streamed out of the park. They stood by the gates, fidgeting and looking back and forth, and generally just looking every bit like the scallawags and rapscallions that they were. Blackbeard came walking out of the park last, glancing idly about, and Grey slowly approached him.

“Well, you won.” Blackbeard held out his hand, which Grey shook. “Never let it be said that I’m not a man of my word, ‘leastways when there’s a binding contract on record that will prevent me from breaking it."

Grey chuckled and nodded. “Noted, then. I do wish you all the best on your journey. And, in compete seriousness, you’re always welcome back here if you ever decide that you’d like to not take the park by force.”

“Yes.” Blackbeard stroked his beard, then shook his head. “I don’t accept charity, anyhows. We’ll be off. It’s been pleasant being in your park. You’ve got a nice establishment, and I wish you all the best.”

With that, Blackbeard marched off to join his crew, and they all moved up to the gates. As they did so, Blackbeard took out his cell phone and started to text once more, and Billie appeared next to Grey with a flash of cotton candy.

“What’s he saying?” Grey murmured softly. Billie didn’t answer immediately, though after a moment, she nodded.

“Bsb. Root. Ym.” At Grey’s confused look, she translated. “Bring ship back. Run out of town. Yar Matey.”

Grey chuckled, then glanced to his side as Professor Windsnipe stepped up next to Grey and crossed his arms. The professor seemed pensive, and Grey let out a long breath.

“Does his acceptance of our terms seem suspicious to you?”

“I was going to make sure you were aware of that fact.” Professor Windsnipe nodded. “I’ve seen him involved in binding contracts before, and when things come up where he’s on the receiving end of trouble, he’ll go to immense lengths to worm his way out of it. He’s the only person I’ve ever seen manage to break a binding contract without suffering the consequences, actually.”

“Really?” Grey raised an eyebrow. “Do tell.”

“It involved a card game, three cattle, and a great deal more whiskey than should have ever been crammed into the hull of his ship.” Professor Windsnipe chuckled. “What helped him was the fact that the details of the contract were rather vague. If he broke it, he was only promised a general sort of death and doom, and since most of us will face that some day, he reckoned he was safe. Seems to have worked out for him well enough, so far.”

“Interesting.” Grey frowned as the Queen Anne’s Payback began to drift closer, sailing up to the front gates to retrieve the pirates. The pirates on board threw across a gangplank, and the long line of thieves and murderers began to walk back off the park. Blackbeard was the last one to go, casting one last look around at things before he vanished onto the deck.
