Chapter Seven

The tunnel widened up into a huge bowl and was filled with all kinds of whizbang things. Abruptly, Lena was reminded of when she had visited Carlsbad Caverns. Her family had taken the walking tour down through the original opening of the cave. It led deep down into the great chasm of the earth; the limestone had been gradually dissolved by acid to produce the amazing spectacle that was the national park. At nearly the bottom was the wide opening that had been transformed into a dining room combined with a gift shop. The floor had been finished, and there had even been telephones off to one side of the tables for calling loved ones from approximately 79 stories down. The ceiling was rough stone with various stalactites, bumps, and deep shadows that all the light in the world would never reach. Even with all the humans gathered there, it seemed a lonely, hollow place in which someone might never escape. Their visit had occurred after being stuck in a mineshaft, and Lena had made it out of the caverns via the elevator, but she’d nearly been unconscious with fear. The only reason she’d made the effort was because she was deeply afraid that she would disappoint her parents again.

This place was much larger than Carlsbad’s Big Room, and she was fairly certain there weren’t any telephone booths at the bottom nor was there a convenient elevator to whisk her away to the topside. The fear bubbled away under the surface of her bravado, reminding her that she was alive and that there was always hope.

The arch of the ceiling was more immense than Carlsbad Caverns. It was a vast bubble that stretched as far as she could see, and she could see because there were lights strung across all the available rock surfaces.

Why did they need all the lights? Why, because it allowed the customers to see all the merchandise in the cages. There were a series of cages mounted on wheels that made Lena think of the centrifugal force ride in a county fair, the Gravitron, albeit this was much slower. The cages were full and slowly circled around so that the creatures crowded beneath could see what was new and unusual. Merchants hawked wares like it was a flea market and the caged ones were corndogs.

Underground, trapped, and unable to escape. It was all part and parcel of Lena’s worst nightmares.

“Something’s going on,” Yves whispered in her ear. He had moved behind her and glanced over her shoulder at the sights before them.

“Yeah, females are being sold,” she said bitterly. It was true that most of the beings in the cages were female. There were some children, too, as well as some exotic animals that Lena didn’t recognize. One seemed to be a Chinese dragon that was wrapped with silver chains. Its long elegant form writhed sluggishly in its enclosure.

Lena took a breath and looked.
