Chapter 14

Mick beamed at her. “Good morning, pretty lady.”

“Mick! How did you get here?”

He lifted a foot to show his heavy walking boots. “These babies took me here across the fields. Very good grip in the soles. And walking on the grass is not half as bad as slipping and sliding on the roads. Ridiculous country. Can’t cope with a bit of frost and ice. If we were in Scandinavia, all the roads would be gritted by now.” He took a step closer and put his arm around her waist. “Still in your bathrobe? You look very cute and tousled.” He kissed her lightly on the mouth. “I feel a great urge to tumble you into somewhere a lot warmer than here.”

She pushed him away. “I’m sorry, Mick. This isn’t a good time.”

“Why not? There’s nothing much to do on a day like today. I was supposed to catch a plane, but I couldn’t catch as much as a bicycle in this weather. He stepped closer again. “Come on, sweetheart. I know you’re probably planning to spend the day painting, but why not take a break? Why not—” He stopped abruptly as his eyes drifted over her shoulder.

Janine turned to see Brian standing there in the silly bathrobe with an even sillier expression on his face. “Oh,” he said, “I’m sorry—”

“No,” Mick filled in with sudden ice in his voice. “I’m the one who should be sorry. Didn’t know there was someone here. Thought I’d come and cheer you up. But I see that has already been taken care of.”

“But...” Janine started. “This is Brian. He’s just a friend.”

“I think we know each other,” Mick said stiffly. “Hello, Brian. Congratulations.”

“Hang on a minute,” Brian growled. “This is not what it looks like. I had to stay the night because...”

Mick backed away. “Yeah, of course you did. And the dog ate your homework. Forgive me if I don’t stay for your hollow excuses.”

Feeling as if she was stuck in a nightmare, Janine found she couldn’t speak. She watched helplessly as Mick turned away and walked back across the garden, leaving dark footprints on the frozen grass.

Brian put his hand on her shoulder. “I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault. Shouldn’t have been here like this. Should have made myself scarce. Should have—”

Janine looked at Brian bleakly. “Not your fault. Or mine. It just happened. We—” she gestured at the diminishing figure walking up the grassy knoll into the next field. “It’s...oh, I don’t know what to say or even what to feel anymore.”

Brian pulled her back inside and closed the door against the cold, damp air. “Come on, go up to bed and have some breakfast. I’ll light the fire down here. Stay in bed and try to get some sleep. I’ll make sure to keep anyone else away. You don’t need any more hassle or uninvited guests, friend or foe.”

Janine laughed bitterly to herself as she carried the tray upstairs, wondering what Brian would say if he knew the real foe was already inside.
