Mick couldnât believe what he heard. Flann had gone too far. âAre you sure it was Flannâs doing? I mean, you said he wasnât there.â
âIâm sure, Mick. Why else would Molly have been alone in the yard today? She hasnât been allowed to be away from the man in weeks. Then I drive in today and itâs like sheâs waiting for me.â He heard the agitation in her voice.
âNo one else knows the farm like he does. Besides you and me, that is. No one else would have known about that trough. Itâs so out of the way. If it wasnât for Molly, Iâm sure this would never have been known for years.â
âI-I donât know what to say, love.â His head spun with thoughts of the things heâd like to do to the bastard when he got his hands on him.
âSay youâll come home, Mick. Please.â
He didnât have to think about. He didnât know if it was the sound of her crying, her pleading that she needed him, or what Flann had done, but he was going home.
âAye. Iâll come home.â He ran his fingers through his hair and let out a long, slow breath to calm down. âIâll leave tonight.â
He heard Kate sniffle into the phone. âThank you. I-I donât know what else to do.â
âYou canât do anything more than you have, Kate. I shouldnât have put you in this position, and now itâs come to this. I take the blame for it.â
âThe only person to blame is Flann. You thought he was okay because he made you believe he was the right man for the job. Iâve seen a different side of him.â
âI know that now. I feel awful that this has happened,â he said.
âWell, when you get home, we can sort this out.â
âWe?â
There was a pause on the line. âYes, I suppose we will.â
Mick liked the sound of that. We.
He thought he would feel some apprehension about going back to the farm. He normally did. The thought he would be seeing Kate again made his heart beat quicker.
âIâll have to stop at the flat for a few things, but it wonât take long. I should be home in about three hours.â
âIâll be here.â To his surprise, he found he liked the idea of Kate waiting for him.
âItâll be late. I can see you tomorrow.â
âDad changed the locks after the break-in so Iâll have to let you in.â
âYou could hide the key.â
âIâd rather not take the chance. I was planning on staying over, anywayâto keep an eye on Molly and the pup. I donât want to move them unless I have to. Now I know youâre coming home, Iâll put fresh sheets on your bed and have Mum bring over a few things for the fridge.â
âYou donât have to do that.â
âThat was part of the deal. Now that youâre coming home, you can take over and I can try getting my job back.â
Mick winced. âIâm really sorry about the job, Kate. If Iâd known how badly things would turn outââ
âYou wouldnât have done anything differently.
