“Mairead!”

She turned to see the mother waving as her daughter led a piebald pony out of their small horsebox. Mairead waved back, plastering a smile onto her face and crossing her fingers that this lesson would go well, that they’d accept that they’d overhorsed their daughter, and that the pony likely needed a spot of re-training before it would be safe and suitable for Carissa. She could already picture Dan on the pony’s back, training the pony to go well and kindly and to regain its confidence…only to have to hand it back again. Mairead sighed. In the harsh light of day, the very idea that she could afford even a fraction of Cubby’s upkeep seemed completely absurd. Unless…

She shook her head, trying to push the puzzle of Kenny’s bequeathment out of her mind. He hadn’t been a man of great means, so she mustn’t get her hopes up that he might have left her anything of great value. But he had been a breeder of rather exceptional ponies, and the thought of what stock he may have left behind had kept her awake until the wee hours of the morning. Would he have entrusted his ponies to her, even after all these years?

As Mairead crossed the yard toward her clients, the piebald pony turned his head, and her mind flew back to another pony from long ago, not one of Kenny’s, but a cobby black and white gelding with two blue eyes, almost hidden amongst the crowds at the Ballinasloe horse fair…

She’d been on her way to Caherdubh, after the disastrous end to her job with Darragh O’Donnell, and had hitched a ride with a couple in a horsebox. They had been heading to Ballinasloe to try and find a new hunter for the husband, and had recognised a fellow horse lover stranded on the side of the road. Mairead had squashed in between them, sitting almost on top of the gearbox in the cramped cab, her left leg slowly going numb as they drove on. But every mile was one mile closer to Caherdubh, and the couple from Tipperary had assured her the Ballinasloe fair was an experience she didn’t want to miss.

The fair itself was chaotic, the crowds dense and noisy, with people and horses everywhere, jostling against her and shouting at her to get out of their way as they trotted their horses down the street, shod hooves clattering against the tarmac. Mairead had tightened her hold on her luggage and looked around for an exit when the piebald pony had caught her eye. He was staring straight at her, unfazed by his surroundings – the calm in the centre of a swirling storm. She found herself drawn toward him, moving closer to where he stood patiently near the edge of the crowd. He didn’t look away until she was right by his side, when the young man holding the other end of his leadrope had turned around and looked at her, and the entire world had fallen out from underneath Mairead’s feet.
