I opened the door to The King’s Head and breathed in the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Some of the regulars were already there and they acknowledged me as I walked to the bar. My favoured corner table was still free. Perfect.

“Mike.” A hand landed on my shoulder. Dan Marshall was standing behind me.

“Dan. Good to see you. Can I get you a drink?”

“I think it is me that needs to buy you one.” He ordered two pints. “I need to apologise for last night. I was a bit out of order.”

“Don’t worry about it. I know how much you care about animals.”

“And I know that you have a job to do. Martin and Hettie, they didn’t deserve that.”

“No, they didn’t. Cheers.” I lifted my pint to my lips and took a long sip. Just what I needed.

“Do you have any ideas yet, Mike?”

“None. We don’t even have a motive.”

“Robbery?”

“Nothing taken as far as we could see. We contacted the son last night and he is going to arrange to fly over as soon as he can.”

“Good.”

I wouldn’t call Dan Marshall a close friend. We met at crime scenes and bumped into each other sometimes, but I could see that he wasn’t his usual self. He kept looking towards the door and anxiety was lurking in his eyes.

“Is everything ok, Dan?”

“Yes, no. Oh, I don’t know.”

“Can I help?”

Dan laughed and punched me on the arm. “I didn’t realise that the role of the police now included relationship counselling.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry.”

“No, it’s ok. Steph is going through a pretty hard time at work at the moment.”

“And she takes it out on you?”

“No, it’s just that she’s become distant. We don’t seem to talk anymore.”

“What’s the problem with work?”
