Beck waited patiently on the plane. He’d sent a car to have Tessa picked up, and according to his watch, they’d be there shortly. She’d been utterly adorable on Friday, asking if she could have a window seat. He couldn’t wait to see her face when she finally boarded.

It wasn’t that he wanted to flaunt his wealth. He just wanted her to see what was available to her if she wanted it. After that almost-kiss, he thought she did. He wouldn’t ask her about it on this trip because he didn’t want her to think that’s why he was taking her. This Boston visit needed to be about business: his with the court and hers with the clinic.

They were finally going to put the last piece of the puzzle together. The clinic was staffed and ready to go the moment the judge lifted the zoning issue. This was almost over.

He checked his watch one last time, feeling less patient as the seconds ticked by. But when he dropped his arm to the armrest, footsteps sounded at the front of the plane. He stood to greet her, eager to see what she thought. Then she appeared, slowly making her way inside with wide eyes and her mouth open.

When Tessa’s gaze landed on him, she put a hand on her hip. “Okay, you could have told me when I asked for an aisle seat that I could have any seat on the plane.” She readjusted the bag on her shoulder and approached him. “Seriously, Beck, this is incredible.”

“Thank you,” he said, extending an arm for her to take a seat next to the window. “Please. Get comfortable. We’ll leave in a minute.”

Grinning, she settled in her seat, her bag on her lap. As she fiddled with the seat belt, she said, “You get to call all the shots? Tell them when to leave?”

“Of course I do.” He got comfortable in his seat next to her. “It’s my plane. My staff. They answer to me.”

Her mouth fell open. “You own this?” she whispered in shock. Then she shook her head and smacked her forehead. “Of course you do.”

He was going to say something else to smooth that over, but the flight attendant came by to let them know they’d be leaving in a minute. He thanked her, and she went to her seat to prepare for takeoff.

When he looked at Tessa again, her face was a little green. “Are you okay?”

Facing the window, she nodded, but it was an unsteady movement. She swallowed thickly, her leg bouncing up and down, before she said, “Yeah, just a little nervous.” Then she turned to him, her knee bobbing up and down. “I’ve never done this before, and I thought I would have more time to get ready.”

Without a word, Beck put his arm out, his palm face up and his fingers splayed open. It was an offer with no strings attached, and he hoped she wouldn’t refuse it. He wasn’t nervous—he flew a lot for business, especially in the last few months of trying to get the clinic off the ground.
